SKS vs Hi point Carbine... New gun time....

Ok, I have got a little money comming in set aside to buying a new gun. I have been wanting a high power rifle (as in bigger then.22LR) I don't want to break the bank here and i want something fun to shoot reliable and CHEAP and CHEAP to shoot and want somthing accurate.

I was originaly sold on a 59 ..59/66 for the 100-150 dollar range, however after talking to a couple people saying i wanted to play around at 50 yards they were quick to say even a red dot sight on a SKS is a joke and follow that up by telling me that i should leave it bone stock and not mess with it or it turns into a unreliable hunk of #$^%#$.

Personaly i really like SKS's and like the idea of them however not surewhat to think, because the ammo is cheap however if its surplus, new WWB is like 16 dollars for 40 bullets...

So the other cheap cool rifle that somehow it pulling some amazing reviews and starting to gather quite a fan basis... the Hi point carbine 9mm and .40cal

First off i have seen several targets from 50 yards with the factory open sights keeing a 1"-2" group. Many say it out performs carbines costing 3-4 times its price tag.

Another plus is i really want to support the company seeing how they are made 20 minutes from my house in dayton ohio. (gotta support your local econ.) Plus i honestly think we will be seeing great things from them.

Another big plus here is the warranty, finding someone to work on a SKS is a little task around here but do able however sending it back or getting free parts for ever sounds good.

So in the, cheap to buy, cheap to buy ammo, fun to shoot, easy upkeep, what does everyone recommend. I want a centerfire automatic rifle and i want something cheap i don't have to worry about.

Any other Center fire guns i am over looking that are a better buy or stuff i need to know and keep in mind i have no first hand experience with either one i have never shot them and i have only held them in my hands at a store. So if there are some SKS guru's sell me on it, same with hi point i really would like to hear about them.

Also if i get a high point should i get a 9mm so i can waste ammo like its my job or get a 40 cal so i have a little more punch for a home defense gun?

Thanks again everyone.... Also i am going to be doing my review on the bersa 380 this week or next like i told everyone on the XD side i would. Tell you this much , after 50 rnds i was able to keep a 3-4" group at 20-25 feet first day out however could not get that "group" to alrigh to the sights on the gun...... another story another gun another post.....

7.62x39 is cheaper than 9mm.

I'd take a rifle cartridge over a pistol caliber one any day at anything over 50yd. After that, you're just getting iffy with accuracy.

yes i would go with a yugo sks over a hi point anyday as well, some people claim that the yugo is going to go the way of the russian and become more valuable soon.

SKS without a doubt. More power, longer range if necessary, spare parts readily available. Most any work needed, which is rare, can be done by the owner. The Hi-Point turns into a massive jigsaw puzzle upon any detailed disassembly. The SKS is easily as accurate as the Hi-Point over a much greater range. I've been shooting SKSs for 40 years and have never had any kind of major problem, I'd take 1 SKS over 10 Hi-Points any time. I would try to find one without the grenade launcher stuff; the unadorned versions are lighter and handier to use. IMHO, of course

SKS all the way. I would not spend a nickel on anything from Hi-point.

I dunno what you're friends are talking about, at 50 yards an SKS is a straight shooter. You won't have so much luck at 200 yards, but hey it's not meant for that and I doubt a 9mm would fare any better.

I would expect a 2"-4" group at 100 yards.
