Auto Painting in Your Garage

I've decided I want to paint the gas tanks and fenders on my motorcycle as a project. Other than an air compressor, which I already have, I'll need to buy everything else (i.e. spray gun, hoses, mask, etc). What do I need to look out for when buying the equipment to ensure I get something that performs well but isn't overly expensive? Will the stuff sold at Lowes/Home Depot work ok, or do I need expensive professional grade sprayers for good results?

Also, does anybody have links to websites that show you step by step how to prep/paint with a sprayer? I tried to google it and only came up with sites selling paint.

Finally, any thoughts on the cheapest place to buy auto paint and clear-coat?

Just do like my mom's step-uncle did when he was about 90 years old. We went to visit him one day and he told us he repainted his car. We went out and looked at it and you could literally see brush strokes from a paint brush all over it.

not an expert by any means, i used to do some airbrushing on the side so i can tell you the basics
must have moisture trap on your air compressor, get a decent spray gun (again i dont know what qualify's as decent), air resperator is always nice so you arent inhaling all those paint fumes into your lungs and blowing out colored snot for a while
doing painting like you are wanting, dust is a major factor, you cant just leave the garage door open (cracked maybe for ventilation though)
ooh yeah, and good lighting (gotta see what you are doing)
sorry if this doesnt help at all

I saw a guy painting airplane parts in his garage on TV. He built a simple little "paint room" out of PVC pipe and plastic sheeting.

On one end he cut a hole that would fit a 20"X20" AC filter and installed, I believe, two normal AC filters. On the outside he had a box fan blowing so that it sucked the air out of the "paint room", but through the ac filters.

He still wore a mask and glasses, and I think a paint suit. IT was a cool show. These guys built an entire kit airplane over several episodes. I believe it was a VANS RV8 airplane.

I worked in body shops for years and started out painting tractor/trailers.Most of the spray guns I've seen at home depot,lowes,etc..probably won't give the results you want.If you'll pm me,I'll try to help ya. EDITED TO ADD-check out spray gun world.com.There is some good info on their site and their prices are realy good.Joe

Besides a water trap, with all the HVLP guns you really should use a quality air pressure regulator. And If you are painting alot of white Good Luck that is the worst color to paint because it will look like everytjhing is white after 30 minutes and you will miss spots. Or could that be that I have painted fifty three foot trailers most of the time?

Good luck on your painting project it can reap many rewards to DIY stuff.
