top 5 gun designers of all time...
I was pondering this topic this morning. Thought it would be easy. I quickly rattled off to myself 5, and then 6, and then 7, and then realized that limiting the list to 5 would be a difficult endeavor. Just wondered who you all would put on your list.
Here's mine (in no order, except for the first, and he is the first): 1. John Browning (I believe, most influential of all time) 2. Paul Mauser 3. Mikhail Kalashnikov 4. Samuel Colt 5. Eugene Stoner Honorable mentions (or other people I wanted to put on the list): Gaston Glock Sergei Simonov John Garand Okay...that's enough for now. Have fun.

For me, one of the main things that the designer had to do is make more than one gun that had widespread useage. Glock and Simonov, well, all they made (as far as I know; I could be wrong) is the Glock and the SKS. Garand I was tempted with because of the Garand and the M14, but I just don't think that those two alone would oust any of the other five as far as influence goes.

Who designed the Maxim machine gun? ?Hiram Maxim?
It was the first gun that used the recoil to load the next round...It changed the world. In fact except for its weight it would be an effective gun today. |

I would have to second a vote for Maxim, besides machine guns, which the US turned down so he turned to Europe to sell them raising the specter of our troops in WWI being gunned down by an American invention, he was a prolific inventor in other fields.

Browning (of course), Maxim (although probably a one-hit wonder), Eugene Stoner, L. James Sullivan and Robert Fremont of ArmaLite Division of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation and the lesser known but prolific Dieudonné Saive (1888 - 1970) of FN Herstal:

I completely forgot about Maxim. Definintely an honorable mention, at least.
And I was wondering who the FN guy was. Thanks Eager.

I would put Kalashnikov in the number 2 position.

No, Paul Mauser stays at #2.
Anyone that owns a Mauser or Springfield rifle will attest...the Mauser brothers designed the best bolt actions ever. -Brickboy240
