I must be dreaming, my wife wants a new mower!

My wife wants a new lawnmower for her birthday!

No kiddin'

She wants a new push mower. The old clunker we have is about 15 years old. I guess I've complained about having to weed eat around the hundreds of plants, trees, bushes and flower beds so much that she is using the old push mower to do some of the trimming, get some exercise and a little sun.

Anyway, she wants a basic mower, not self propelled, no bagger and no more government safety devices than is absolutely necessary. Mulching is OK, probably preferred because when my wife starts cutting it's your responsibility to get out of her way. She'll blast you with the discharge and laugh while you're picking debris out of your knee.

I need a lightweight 21 or 22 inch cut mower for her. I've looked at a Bolens at Lowe's, the Huskee mowers at Tractor Supply and the Craftsman offerings at Sears. They're all in the $150 to $200 price range. That's about what I'm gonna spend.

Some are 21", some are 22", some are 4 HP, some are 5. Some do this, some do that.

Do the mowers with the bigger wheels in back have a great advantage?

I want to keep it a 4 stroke, we definitely don't want to have to get into mixing gas and oil for her mower. It's a concept she doesn't understand. If it's in a gas can it's supposed to work in anything she puts it in.

Anybody have a mower they're especially proud of they'd like to speak out about? Or warn me away from a certain kind?

Thanks,

bd

I bought a Yard Man mower from Wal-Mart similar to this one a couple of years ago.

I'm really pleased with it. The bigger wheels make it a little easier to turn.

Oh yeah, congrats on "converting" your wife. Man, if mine asked for a lawn mower for her b-day, I'd be looking for the lightening strike!!

My Sears brand has those big wheels too, but they're plastic and like to bend side to side, if you can get metal or a composite wheel

I bought a Craftsman with a Honda engine and it's great but it was out of that price range.

The big wheels do help, however the engine size is more important. Don't get anything less then 6.5HP. This will help in longer, wet, or thick grass.

I prefer a bagger on my mower, as I am not big into raking or de-thatching.

Husqvarna brother.. you won't need another one for another 15 years... which reminds me.. I need to mow the lawn.

I have a Craftsman with a 7HP Briggs & Stratton, and I couldn't be happier with it unless it mowed the lawn itself. It has never taken more than 2 pulls to start, and I'm in the 3rd season using it.

I bag my clippings if I skip a week, but if I mow weekly, I skip bagging and mulch.

New mower? Cutting around trees, shrubs, flowers & bushes? Sounds like a lot of work and expense. I prefer my method. With my method, there are no trees, flowers, bushes or shrubs. My wife wants me to plant something but I tell her it would be cheaper to just put out a few bales of hay. Our little friends take care of anything green and growing. We've had 22 of the little lawn mowers in our front yard before:

(I'm exagerating a bit. I do own a lawnmower. It's a Sears with the big wheels in the back but it's self propelled. It drives off the smaller, front wheels. I prefer my worn out Airens (?) which was a rear wheel drive.)
