Puppys/dogs.... Vet? or Do it yourself?

Im curious if any of you give your dogs shots/examinations ect. ect. yourself instead of paying the vet to do it?

Im asking because I just took my new puppy to the pet vet and it seems it cost a bit much for what they actually did.

Routine examination- $36.50

Deworming (2 pills by mouth)- $12.80

Fecal O&P- $19.65

+ tax= 69.89

I think I could do the routine exam and deworming pills myself and save $50..

It pisses me off because I pay this guy $70 and they tell me they would get back to me within 24 hours with the out come of my puppys fecal sample, after waiting 9 days I finally call them, only be put on hold for 5 minutes and told "oh the doctor doesnt call people back if there isnt anything wrong" Im like, "well he better for the prices im paying him"

So what do you guys think? Am I being a complainer or do I have a point with this?

Are the prices I paid about the same as what you pay?

We've always done any and all pills at home. We've recently started doing shots at home as well, but there are doctors in my family, so don't do it if you're not comfortable with it.

I doubt you could purchase the vaccinations yourself even if you did have the skill, and the desire to administer them. Either way I'm of the opinion anything done subcutaneously should probably be administered by a trained professional.

Beyond that, if there's nothing wrong with our pets we don't take them to the vet.

Then again, we adopted ours from the Animal Shelter. Spaying, vaccinations, and the initial examination were all included in the adoption price.

Send a message via Yahoo to shyi3t
sometimes if it's for shots .. yah we go to the vet but the deworming or feeding the stuff we just buy it from there or go to the store and buy the dewormer and give it to the dog ... sometimes we go online to see if we could do it ourselves.

Could really be that hard with a little internet research?

Yeah, they seem constant with the prices out here. Have you looked at any other vets to see their prices?

If you do decide to do any Sub-q injections on your animals please use sterile procedure. If you are not familiar with sterile procedure please send me an email and I'll introduce you to and walk you through the concept. It involves far more than just wearing gloves.

The last thing you want for you or your puppy is a nasty infection caused by an inappropriately performed injection.

I got all of that initially with the adoption of mine, plus a month of insurance for free, which was a good deal because he soon got kennel cough, then pneumonia and his vet bill was $2100 for his 4 days of hospitalization.
