I'd do what you can yourself like the deworming pills. Definitely could save some money buying them yourself and giving them to him.

This isn't auto mechanics. It is the treatment of complex living creatures. If you mess up the patient dies. If you can't see the difference, I guess I'm glad that I'm not your dog.

Oh my gosh, are you kidding me? I was giving an example of why you don't trust everyone bree not comparing a living creature to a motor.... Come on get with it......

I do see the difference and if you read the whole thread before you posted your insulting statment you would see that I do understand that there is a certain degree of which it would be out of my hands (post# 13) I don't think I can take everything upon myself, I never said that, I would never even attempt it.. Again, my point is that just because a person is labeled a "professional" doesn't mean anything. And if you or anybody for that matter trusts anyone for the only the reason being is that they are labled a "professional" then I think that person needs a little more life experience because in my eyes that labels a person a sucker.

Your post is totally irrelevant and I ask for you to read the whole thread before you post again, specifically posts #13 & #27 #36

I read the posts. I heard what you and others said. Vets are Doctors. It is a PROFESSION. They are licensed and regulated just like MD's. Auto mechanics and other people claiming to be "professionals" do not have the same requirements of education, training, experience, examination, licensure, continuing education, peer review, and governmental regulation.

There is no sense in which anyone here who has not completed the requirements of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine can be said to be competent to make medical decisions about treating an animal. Even MD's may not have the training to understand the issues of the dog's health since they are trained to treat human bodies. One cannot gain medical competency by Googling internet sites.

Now if you feel that the medical treatment of a dog should be left to Veterinary professionals, then you have my most sincere apologies. But if you think you can trim the cost of ownership of a dog by doing some or all of the Vet's medical work for him, my comments stand.

I just dont think a vet is needed for every little thing, thats all. If you dont agree with that then I guess we can both agree not to agree and leave it at that.

We don't disagree at all. Vets are needed for the medical care of animals. There are tons of things where they are neither needed nor desired.

A couple of years ago our Black Lab was dying. We knew that she would soon expire as she could no longer eat or take water due to a cancer. The Vet immediately suggested putting her down. I asked why? She was not in any pain. She continued to wag her tail and participate in family life. She would die in her own time and in her own way. We simply wanted the Vet to help her remain hydrated during her last days or hours.

The vet injected sugar water which refreshed our dog and made her very happy. The next day we were about to eat dinner and she wanted to come and join us but was unable to walk. We helped her into the kitchen and she wagged her tail and had a big Black Lab smile. We sat on the floor with her. She looked out the window and saw the birds on our feeders... She saw the sun. And she lay in our arms on the floor of the kitchen as we caressed her. She closed her eyes and died.

No vet was needed nor was the vet's skill desired. We listened to the vet's prognosis for the dog and we respected her suggestion to put the dog down. But since she agreed that the animal felt no pain and was not suffering the decision wasn't medical. It was a decision as to what was in the dog's best interest. And we chose to allow her to die at home naturally.

Vets dont choose the food or vitamins we feed our animals. We do that. Vets don't chose the playthings or bedding of our animals. Vets don't choose how and where we exercise our animals.

Vets do choose the medicines that are used to treat our animals. Vets do perform medical procedures on our animals when they are necessary. Vets do examine our animals periodically and test them, vaccinate them, and otherwise maintain their proper health.

Sometimes the Vet will recommend something that may be based on a remote possibility. We might decline the recommendation based on our ability to afford the treatment and our estimate of the animal's need or exposure.

The bottom line is that we don't invade our Vet's areas of expertise. But we are ultimately responsible for the welfare of our animals... not the Vet. Ultimately we make decisions based on what is in the animal's interest. We don't see ourselves so much as owners but rather we are caretakers and guardians.

I'm sure you feel much the same way.

Uhm, giving heart worm pills and shots ain't real high on the list of medical decisions.

The fact is, since we are comparing it to the automotive industry...

If the dealer charges 50 bucks for a lube oil and filter change and you can go to valvoline and get it done for 20 bucks, or you can buy the oil and filter your self for 10 bucks which one are you going to pick?

We are talkin doggie MAINTENENCE here, not illness treatment, so talk car maintenence instead of repair.

I only need to know how much my doggie weighs in order to properly heart worm em and give em the shots, it is not complex, it is not particularly dangerous, and it should not require the license of a vet to get done. It most certianly should not cost 280 bucks like I was quoted for my 12.5 pound buttons.

Years ago, animals were put down by their owners with a gun. But, back then people had a lot more resolve, grit, and sense of duty than the vast panty-waste today.
I would have told him to go rent Of Mice and Men and then come and talk to me.
