I almost resist entering this thread - because on EVERY forum - these threads generate when the SAME "trolls" enter the thread - insult the weapon and round, and just continue to repeat the same claims time after time - claims that they "heard" from someone else who doesn't own the weapon either...
But... I have a PS90 and a Five Seven. My Five Seven is my nighstand gun. The 5.7 round was designed to not overpenetrate, and to fragment on hard targets. The 197 round fragments even more - It makes a great indoor defense round. It will penetrate less interior walls than a standard handgun round (I bought this after my son was born). Someone on my forum, the FN Forum, also did some tests with the round in a ballistic tube - and the results were pretty impressive. There are also some other tests posted on a few forums by P99guy. People can complain and moan about the round. But I've read enough tests that show very favorable results - and have no problem using the round for defense. One need not obsess about the fact that we can't buy the SS190 round. The 195 civilian round actually penetrates pretty well too. And, the 197 fragments and makes a bigger hole - just not as deep. If you could search "5.7" you could find the thread about this where I looked up a bunch of stuff and compared 5.56, 5.7, and .17hmr based soley on the numbers and various un-official armor penetration tests done by various forum members elsewhere. The bottom line (for me anyway) is that for the price of the ammo, it ain't worth it. The "coolness factor" is way up there on these 5-7's though. 20 rounds of a hot small fast flat shooting round coming out of an auto-loading handgun is pretty dang cool in my book. If I could afford to feed one, I'd buy one.

I was actually going to get the FN57 pistol instead of my first XD. Only thing that changed my mind that day was prices in ammo.
I'm glad of my decision but one day I shall have the 57! |

I got to shoot one at a shoot/show last summer here in missoula. It's kind of neat. Not much recoil to it. Most of the pistol benches had 5 yard and 15 yard targets set up (clays clipped to chicken wire) Since the FN's were mostly rifles they had gongs set up at 100 yards (Oxy tanks with the bottoms cut off) and the 5seven would rock the gong pretty well at that distance. 40 rounds of that stuff with a reload would be a lot of firepower to carry. Maybe the round is small enough it wouldn't knock the meanest bad guy down, but he should go down after 4 or 5 more. The idea behind the bullet is that it tumbles really well after it contacts the target which does damage on par with a decent hollowpoint. I think I read somewhere that it leaves between a two and three inch wound channel. It also doesn't overpenetrate which is a plus if used in crowded areas or urban settings. Would probably make a good carry gun for someone who needs light recoil.

You should buy one because some Zombies wear Kevlar.

They look pretty cool, but I'm not sure I have a niche that they'd fill.
