Had the same issue with a chevy truck w/individual coil packs per cylinder. Check engine light came on, hesitation, stuttering. ODBII code read misfire in cylinders 1 and 4. Ended up being bad injectors. Replaced them with new and the problem went away. 30 min fix tops after narrowing down the problem.

I had the same issue, got worse over time, I thought it was a lot of different things. I ended putting all new OEM plugs and wires in and it still didn't fix the problem.

Turned out to be a. . . drum roll please. . . coil pack!

P.S. You can have a vehicle scanned at Advanced Auto Parts or Auto Zone for free, as long as you have OBDII which started with 96 models.

First off check out http://www.maxima.org/ lots of good info for maxima owners .. it actually saved my ass of having to replace a trans after nissan misdiagnosed it.

I have a 2000 SE that had a similar issue it would idle fine but if you didnt give it a chance to warm up good and tried to accelerate hard it would hesitate and stumble and the check engine light would intermittantly come on. We basically put up with it and finally it shutoff after 6 months of this on the wife so I took it to the local dealership(toyota) where I bought my car (for the free loaner vehicle). They diagnosed it as being plugs and MAF sensor. Before they changed them they suspected a trans issues because of the jerky hesitation issues we described and they sent it to a local crappy nissan dealership (which is the reason toyota works on my nissan)where it was misdiagnosed as needing a new tranny.

Then it was sent to a trans shop where nothing could be found as being wrong. Car was between 3 different shops in a 2 week period
. During this time I hit the above maxima site and read up and posted and was told that the plugs and MAF sensor could cause the same symptoms as a tranny problem. We went and picked car up and carried back to regular shop they changed plugs and MAF sensor and I have not had any problems since and they had the nerve to write that the car still has a trans issue on the paperwork..

Word of warning they are not as friendly as this site so use the search .. last time I was their about 6 months ago you had to pay to use there search .. and non payers had to use a google search ... look at the FAqs

I have been on there as well, many have said to start checking the injectors which I plan to do. Did your car throw a MAF sensor code? I may try gently cleaning the thin wire filament in the MAF to see if that helps. I know you can test injectors with a OHM meter is that a reliable way of doing it? As I have tested every single coil pack both the used replacement ones and the originals and they were within spec.

I took it to Advanced Auto Parts and they scanned for stored codes and that is when the 0702 code popped up.

Humble Pie - Fixed!

I was checking the injectors with my multimeter, the front ones, thank god. So I got checking them and they all register right around 11-12 ohms which is within spec. Okay, cool, now I start thinking that this is getting frustrating and look to test the rear injectors, which I decide not to do tonight as they are under the intake manifold. Anyway, then I think to myself, Gravel is adament that it is a coil pack. I am just going to double check all of the connections for the coil packs. So I start unplugging them and plugging them back in.

So I start and then I go to pull one of the connectors off and it wasn't even tight so I doubt it was even connected!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I go and make sure it is plugged in securely. Start the car, do a wonderful test drive now that I have 6 cylinders working, and no SES light!

I can't believe this, I mean, I have done some stupid crap before but this is about the best.

Thank you all for your help! It turns out that I am just an idiot!

Gravel and the others you were right, it was a coil pack!
