Oh great... now I want a 1911...
I was in the local fun store today and just for grins a giggles was looking at the 1911s.
Im not a 1911 guy... I have been a Glockie for some time... but the guy handed me this Springfield 1911 A1, that has had a bit of work done to it... extended slide release, extended beaver tail, extended safety, stainless barrel/bushing, stainless hammer/trigger... Damn it.. Im not supposed to like 1911s! Well.... here is my point. He handed me and I fell in love with the damn thing. Its used... but does not look like it was used much. My question is... what is a fair price? He was asking 550, said he would take 500 and throw in a used leather Galco paddle holster. Your thoughts?

Take a long hard look at it, and offer 450 with a stern look on your face. Then make sure he thinks you think there is something wrong with it. Do all the usual checks.

Welcome to reality.
Are you sure that Springfield was a custom job? SA offers several 1911's that they call "Loaded" and the come with all the things you mentioned except the ext slide stop. Did it have a flat or arched mainspring housing? |

Checkering or none? Front cocking groves? Quality beavertail? does the barrel say Springfield Armory on it? Is it stainless(whole gun or just parts)? Any chrome? plastic grips or wood? Nee a picture if you have one. Take the gun apart and look at all the part carefully. make sure the safety works. Alot of 1911's that have aftermaerket safeties might be put on by the user and they can really mess it up bad. I am not going to give you a blow for blow on how to pick a good used gun but I will sugest you get The Gun Digest Book Of The 1911, by Patrick Sweeney
Book Of The 1911 This book explains everything you need to know about this gun and all of the tricks to find the right used one. No 1911 owner should be without it.

I wouldn't trust anybody that shoots pistols and doesn't like 1911's. Gotta be something wrong up top. Just can't possibly be all there....
Congrats on seeing the light! If it's a "loaded" springfield, I'd say $550's ok. Sure, offer the low ball...just make sure she comes home with ya.

Buy it! I bought my first 1911 in December and freaking love it! It is a PX9181L (V12 Stainless) that I got slightly used at a gunshow with all the papers and the loaded coupon for $575, a pretty good deal. The only problem was the rear sight was loose, which seems to be common among SA's, but a little red loctite did the trick.
Is it stainless? Ask how many rounds have been through it. Who knows it may already be broken in. I agree with offering $450 the worst he will say is no. Good luck! |

Well... this is totally ****ed....
I just found out that a local shop is having a sale on S&W 1911s and they are offering a package of the 1911 PLUS two additional spare mags (wilson or novaks) for a total of 4 mags!! And the price would only be approximately 100 more. And the SA 1911 I was looking at only comes with one COLT factory mag. I am really tempted to go for the S&W instead.

Bear B,
That shop is screwing you. That 2 extra mags deal has nothing to do with the shop. It's a S&W promotion. You can print the coupon off their website. YOU buy any SW1911 before 6/30 and you get two extra Wilson 8 round mags by mail |
