What is the refund anyway. I have seen two different stories today and one is twice the refund as the other. One said $300 per paycheck and $300 per child with a max of 1200 and the other said $600 per paycheck and $300 per child with a max of 2400.

They are ironing out the details. Last I heard they were trying to attach food-stamps and other assorted crap onto the band-aid.

EDIT: But I did hear $600 per individual, $1200 per couple, and $300 per child.

This refund, while I will take it, is only going to make things worse. It is going to create a two month consumer spending window that disappears when the money is gone. Follow with me here: Most people have debt, most people with debt pay the monthly minimums and nothing more. They pay cash for nothing, hell even fast food takes credit now. Get tax refunds every year and most of these people dont apply it toward bills, it goes toward a new TV, cause the two they and still owe on are not good enough. It is a band-aid with no adhesive.

I did see where the Dems were trying to add Food Stamps, Extend Unemployment and a few other things, but Pelosi had a hand in this agreement. So for the meantime it looks like they are not going to attach anything to it.

The $600 per taxpayer and $300 per child is what I've been able to get out of it so far as well. The part that sucks for this taxpayer is that we might be left out in 2008 because of a one time Capital gain we took by selling some stock to pay cash for a piece of land. Unless the rules when finally signed state that this has to be earned income we'll have to wait until 2009 to claim it as this one transaction put us over the income max. The good news is that they have apparently included a provision that this can be claimed in 2009 if you come in under the limits.

Since my wife and I are expecting our second child in Feb. Should I think about waiting until next year, or will they change the rule and I lose out. Probably shouldnt take the chance.

I'm just trying to figure this out along with all other taxpayers but if your child was not born in 07 then this would not be an issue unless you exceeded the income cap in 07 but would not in 08. I don't think a child born this year effects the rebate.

By the way, congratulations on the second child!

GoldDot, it is true that it is your money being returned to you, but it would be a really serious drag if you had to send it out and see nothing back. No good deed goes unpunished for high earners. Look for much more of the same after the 08 elections....hand on wallet feeling a little nervous....
