There comes a point when "holding for evidence" is just government-sanctioned theft! Unless the weapon needs to appear in court, there's absolutely no reason for them to keep it.
Incidentally, this is another reason why I love the XD: It's reasonably-priced such that I could actually just buy another one if someone ran off with it. As much as I adore a 1911, it would royally suck to lose one. Viva la XD carry!
