Ah ha... I would have to concur. With no disrespect to any LEO, but you can't compare a SWAT team to an elite force who's main objective is stealth at which they practice relentlessly. Just the other day I was watching a special on how gangs were enlisting in the military so they can bring the tactics back to thier gang. A single Marine Lance Cpl (Gang member) ambushed 5 Officers with an SKS (and military tacktics). They were un-trained and unprepared for the ambush. One died another wounded (with several shots). Only one of the officers was a ret. sgt. of the Army and knew what was going on, needless to say he took cover and fast. Again nothing to deminish LEO's (and SWAT)they just simply lack the training.

Just like I was watching Kansas City SWAT on TV and they said they have adopted the Marine Corps PFT, so they are as good as the Marines, two different professions, like night and day. Maybe when the SWAT team goes to the other side of the world, perform thier SWAT tactics 12 hours a day for 6 months away from thier families, we can start comparing them to the military.

I am not downsizing the SWAT team, I am just saying you shouldn't compare them.

I am a huge proponent of the Police. Big time. I am not a "hater", like many people are. I have many officers in my family. As a matter of fact, I am kinda from one of those Irish cop families that you see on TV so much. I am the loser that got into I.T. versus being a cop. LOL. Anyhow, I say "thanks" to my police, just like I do a serviceman. I have a good P.D. in my home town. They are responsive, and I apprecaite their professionality. However, the SWAT component is multi-jurisdictional, and they really take stuff to their head. I see them frequently at the range, and I am personally familiar with a few of them. They are REALLy taking it to their head.

Ok, now that I have clarified my position, I am off the "cop" topic. I don't want to offend the PoPo around here, as I like and respect most of them.

SWAT=Special Weapons And Tactics, it is a very good group of police. Differing primarily in they can ALL SHOOT, many cops don't practice shooting. They also get flashbangs, and are actually expected to be in a fight using a firearm by the end of their career. As of which they train harder, and better than the average Police officer, They also know how to clear buildings, unlike a Cop who's primary purpose is to deal with people.

SEALs go through
BUDS=Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL school. I witnessed listened to some friends who saw the mini buds at the naval academy, they were on the ice doing push ups with a ruck sack on their back, 18 months later the guys still had scar lines from the rucks. The SEAL test is 1.5 miles in 11 minutes in combat boots and goes on from there for the rest of the day, thats just to get an opportunity to go to it (ever lay on your back and do two leg kicks for 2 minutes, then all the pull ups you can for two minutes, it sucks). Ultimately SEALS can go their lives without ever firing (look at the guy who runs blackwater in for five years, never in a firefight) if they are shooting, they did something wrong.

USMC PFT=3 mile run, as many pull/chin ups as you can, and as many crunches in 2 minutes. 3 miles doesn't do anything for you that a SWAT team would encounter, except maybe tell you their ability to use oxygen, so how well they will recover after running up ten flights of stairs. I think a SWAT guy should be tiny, fast and can move with the body armor on. A marine, has to be able to fight for 80 hours straight, go ask my Drill instructors, the Sgt that taught us the SAW was in a 84 hour fight, in a hole,(he had to use his iodine tablets due to unable to get resupplied)

All very good groups of people, and not even close to comparable between the three

We need more laws to protect these three rights. Ban guns in schools, it obviously works.

I agree. Not comparable.

Police do need more training, though. As an LEO, I'll be the first to say that. I crave training, and often seek it out on my own and pay for it out of my own pocket.

I must emphasize, they did not "write me up" for disputing the point. It was more the choice of words that I wrote, and the possibility that my words offended someone.

Yocan, not a flame, but I wanted to point out that isn't true. LASD SWAT, which is considered one of the top ones in the country (I'm saying that because it is true, not because I worked for the dept.), is composed of deputies of different heights and they do an outstanding job. One was a classmate and I worked with a couple of the others at one time. Obviously, they are all in excellent shape and train hard.

That being said, I would not compare them to a SEAL team for all of the reasons given.
