Just curious what you think of not being able to fly unless you have proper paperwork in hand, and also how you feel about the potential to become a non-citizen without the ability to vote or be recognized if you resist/delay your conformity.

May of 2008 is rapidly approaching.

SCOTUS judge appointments ... Will last much longer than Obama or McCain.

I would think that if rights are abridged (voting in particular), the SCOTUS would most likely become involved.

It's quite simple, really...
If you vote for Obama, you are a fu*king idiot.
If you vote for McCain, you are a fu*king idiot.
If your vote is for the lessor of two evils, then you can be comforted knowing that you're less of a fu*king idiot than the other guy!

Because Fritz says so!

but it'll stop terrorists.

ETA: those expensive cards, that all employers will supposedly bea ble to just magically know if they're legal, because they will all have biometric scanners attached to the federal immigrant database? or the state one? both?

i'm currently writing my state representatives and senator to try and get some clarification by someone as to whether or not SD will be joining this... debate - if you can call it that - over the REAL ID.

my letter to the State Legislators, Rep. Vehle, Rep. Carson, and Sen. Olson -

I'm writing to you today concerned over the REAL ID act.

Under the guise of counter-terrorism and illegal immigration reform, the FEDERAL government is creating mandatory guidelines for STATE drivers' licenses, and is using the threat of "no more travel/government-aid for citizens" if it is not enacted by the State.

ABC News has already proven these cards can be hacked by simple Radio Frequency scanners, and the information used to gain access to secure areas (the story was from California, where Assm. Fran Pavley (D - Agoura Hills) had her identity stolen from her card to show its obvious lack of security.)

I'm against this measure for several reasons, one is the insecurity stated above.

Another serious question for this measure, is why must they create de facto "non-citizens" of my fellow South Dakotans should the State deny the REAL ID, such as Maine has voted to do?

Yet another question - it is supposed to curb illegal immigration. Will employers have instant access to this federal (or possibly state, or both) database with all of my biometric information, and who is to stop anyone else from using this database? Who will foot the bill for these databases in the first place? This isn't even counting the enforcement challenges that will be added as police are required to scan biometrics and upgrade their equipment to handle these cards...

The federal government is seeking to make the states the "fall-guy" for its failures in border security and immigration control!

In lieu of all of these questions, and a since distrust of federal intrusion into the State's affairs (and my own,) i am wholeheartedly against this legislation, and i hope you will work to get it rejected by our great state as well.

I am awaiting your reply, and thank you for your time.

It smacks of "Big Brother" type oversight, but I could get behind it if:

1. It assists in identifying illegal aliens
2. Identifies law abiding citizens so my firearms dealer would get a faster DOJ check and I wouldn't need a 10 day waiting period.
3. Would streamline airport security, shortening the "search".

I seriously doubt it would be used for these purposes though. If all I get out of this is some ambiguous "safety" then they can keep it.

In the lifetime of your kids, I predict the following will come true:

1) You must carry a specific Federal ID at all times.
2) You must present it to make a financial transaction or work.
3) You must present it to travel from state to state.
4) Roadblocks will appear to catch people w/o their 'papers'.
5) People caught without their papers will be detained in federal facilities.
6) It will be readable from 40' away w/ scanners without your knowledge or consent.
7) When your ID is stolen by hackers, your finances will be frozen until it is cleared up by a federal agency both understaffed and under-trained to perform this task within 3 months. Probably your ability to function is society will be frozen. Possibly debtors prisons will come back.
Your 'right' to firearm ownership will be gone.

My understanding is either Arizona or New Mexico is the only state out of all of them that is specifically named in the bill that has opted out of the whole National ID deal.

Right, because people who have no criminal records and valid ID's are incapable of terrorism.
