So there I was,.....you aint going to believe this!
at my local range.
Saturday morning, 38 degrees, slightly raining, had the range all to myself. I brought my Mini Target and my Remington 700, 7mm RUM, and my 870 Marine Mag, 12ga. I needed some Shotty trigger time, needed to tweak both rifles' scopes and check for POI variances due to some new ammunition. I placed three targets out, 25m, 50m and 100m. The range has nice 2" solid steel "A" frames of sorts. I used some cardboard backers and used a multi-colored targer 2'x3'. Started at the 25m target, shot three from the Remy, tweaked it to where I wanted it. Followed up the adjustments with three following shots. Life is still good. I got out the Mini Target, same routine, fiered five shots, made adjustments, fired five more. Life is still good. I moved to the 50m target, ran some shells and slugs thru the 870, having a ball. Got out the Remy, fired three, corrected my over adjustments made at 25m. Seems I forgot that at 25m the bullet is still rising. Got the 700 set where I wanted it. Next comes the Mini Target, fired five, shot a ragged quarter sized hole, dead center on target. Hejj yea! Howeer I was shooting a bit left, decided to fire five more to see if the scope needed adjusted or if it was my cheek weld. Here's when the crap-hi-the-fan! I fired one shot, looks good, keep in mind I have a Burris 3-9x40 scope mounted, I have it set on about 6.5 magnification, I am holding cross-hairs dead on, so carefully squeezing the trigger for the second shot. Just as the trigger breaks, I see fur, lots of fur! Holy crap, six deer just ran across the range, at about the 80m mark. Now keep in mind, to get there they just climbed a 25' earth berm, and ran about 15m to run directly acros my shooting lane. Oh crap! One is down! The other five scurry up the other berm and out of sight. The adult doe , hit somewhere in the back is flailing about, trying to get away, back legs paralyzed from the trauma to the back. I fired another shot, whick ended up being a broadside shot just behind the eyes, dispatching the doe. From the time the trigger was pulled to the time I dispatched the deer was 20seconds,....max. the ammount of crap that goes thru your mind in that short ammount of time. To sum this up,.... I made a few calls, got ahold of the Park Ranger. This range is on Wildlife Management land controlled by the Georgia dept of Natural Resources. The ranger listenes to my story, says "this is so hard to believe" takes a look at the tracks, verifies everything I told him. He then, in turn, calls the local Game Warden Heck of an experience, I'd like to leave you all with a few things to get out of this. One, if something like this happens to you, do not touch the carcass, stay away from the area, tracks would have been disrupted. Second, have your local Game Warden's number, Sheriff's number and any other controling agencies of your range in your cell phone. Lastly, keep in mind, while you may think you are the only one at the range, this can change to seven in a split second. Thanks for listening..... ![]() |

Wow, that is nuts, you wouldnt think deer would run towards the area that guns are being fired, unless being chased. That sounds like something that would happen to me though
Did they let you keep it?

No, the Game Warded had contacted a local needy family who was much appreciative to get the deer.

Oh, well thats good. It turned out to be a good day. You got a moving target to practice with and a family got some food. Sounds like a good day at the range to me.

Yeah I know, I was just joking around
Its a good story, and like I said, something like that would probably happen to me.

Something distantly similar happened to me once. I was out setting up a shotgun for turkey season. Shooting at a target, figuring out my pattern at distances and on my 3rd shot out of an auto I turn around to get more ammo and see a doe jump a fence aways from me, she was obviously spooked from me shooting but she jumped a fence towards me, ran straight at me, got within 20 feet and stopped, stared at me and when I waved my hands, she ran away.
It was kinda windy and rainy and I guess it carried sounds weird and she thought she was running away instead of towards me. Could have been what happened in your situation. |
