It's my day off during the week (I work a 4-10 or 4-12 schedule), so I was sleeping in. About ten minutes after eight I'm starting to come around and in that half-asleep state where sounds sometimes get distorted. I hear a "crack" from a little ways away, and think through my stupor, "That sounded a lot like a gunshot". There was a delay with no other noise, so I start thinking it was a car backfiring. A minute or so later, there are more, plus the sound of somebody yelling (too distant to understand words), and the sounds of somebody running on the gravel in the easement behind our place.

Now I'm convinced something is going down. I shook the wife awake (she sleeps with earplugs in), told her I heard gunshots, and to her credit she drops to the floor and stays quiet. I heard one or two more shots, and then all is quiet again. No sirens, or anything. I called it in, but sound echoes through these townhomes so much I couldn't give them a firm location. It sucks, really....this is the first time in the two and a half years we've lived here that anything like this has happened. I hope we don't have baddies moving in--another reason to keep the XD hot and carry as much as possible, I guess. Ugh.

Wow. Glad you guys are safe, and that it didn't spill over into your yard & house.

There really is no "safe place" to live as far as crime and violence goes. That's too bad. Have the police showed up and visited with you & your neighbors about what you heard & saw? Find any spent casings?

The dispatcher said she'd put out a call for a unit to respond and check things out, but never asked for my address or contact info (and I called on a cellphone). In these situations I don't think there's really much they can do, unless the action is still happening when they show up. I'm eating a leisurely breakfast (with the XD and an extra mag exactly 19 inches away), but when we go out later we'll look around a bit.

I moved to Seattle last August. About a week after we moved into our apartment, my husband and I were awoken at about 3 am by about 5 gun shots. We were thinking "Oh, good Lord, what did we get ourselves into here?"

About a month ago, we were woke up in the middle of the night by a big commotion we could hear about 2 blocks away. We could hear sirens, a booming voice on a loud speaker, gun shots, and then silence. There was absolutely nothing in the news about it. My husband works with a woman who lives a little bit closer to where all the noise was coming from, and she said that a vagrant had barracaded himself inside of a thrift store. She didn't know why or when the shots had been fired.

I just can't believe that all of this goes on in a neighborhood where it costs $500,000 to buy tiny house or condo.

You'd be surprised how little makes it to the paper. If it's bad for local business, it frequently doesn't get published. There was a couple of guys going around stealing stuff at the mall last year. One guy would get ahead of the other. The other guy would follow a woman with a load of stuff to her car and as she's working on getting the keys out to get in the vehicle, the other guy would go for her legs sometimes slashing with a knife. Off they went with the purchases.

Another lady this Christmas season was kidnapped at gun point from the parking lot in her own van. It was more of a carjacking, but the guy didn't want her van. He told her to drive to some area behind a different shopping center and give up her cash/cards/id/cellphone.
