I don't live in a bad neighborhood or anything but I still installed motion-activated lights and I employ two Pitbulls just in case (not to mention XDs and shotguns).

Yeah...motion lights are near the top of the project list.

I used to live near downtown Baltimore in one of the "better" neighborhoods. It is bordered by a bad neighborhood that has a large # of shootings and murders every year. So of course I could hear gunshots at night often, coming from the bad area. One weekend I was away and when I came back my housemate told me some guy was chased through the little park behind our row of houses, while some other guy was shooting at him. People got robbed at gunpoint in the neighborhood too, it was kind of common in fact. I always had my big funny looking dog with me, so I was never bothered by anyone.

About ten minutes after eight I'm starting to come around and in that half-asleep state where sounds sometimes get distorted. I hear a "crack" from a little ways away, and think through my stupor, "That sounded a lot like a gunshot". There was a delay with no other noise, so I start thinking it was a car backfiring. A minute or so later, there are more, plus the sound of somebody yelling (too distant to understand words), and the sounds of somebody running on the gravel in the easement behind our place.

Now I'm convinced something is going down. I shook the wife awake (she sleeps with earplugs in), told her I heard gunshots, and to her credit she drops to the floor and stays quiet. I heard one or two more shots, and then all is quiet again. No sirens, or anything. I called it in, but sound echoes through these townhomes so much I couldn't give them a firm location. It sucks, really....this is the first time in the two and a half years we've lived here that anything like this has happened. I hope we don't have baddies moving in--another reason to keep the XD hot and carry as much as possible, I guess. Ugh.
See, now a very similar thing happened to me not too long ago. I posted a thread about it on this forum if you're interested. Long story short, at 3 am, I heard 6 rapid gun shots that sounded so loud and close, I thought it was in the house. But it turned out to be from somewhere outside. Where, exactly, I could not figure out. No sirens, no lights, nothing. I didn't call it in simply because I had nothing usefull to tell the dispatcher other than "I heard gunshots". Which, where I live, could be in any number of homes. A long while before that, I called in an argument that was brewing into a fight just down the street from me. I could not tell which house, and the dispatcher would not send anyone out because I did not know the exact location and "police have other urgent matter to tend to." She said unless there was an ambulane needed, or others call, no police will be sent. Gee, that's just friggin great. I got a little frustrated and then she told me if I didn't calm down, she will send someone to come and get me for harrassing and abusing the 911 line. Even better. So, I do not have any faith in the system. And that is why I own a gun. Because, obviously, I'm not on their priority list.

We live in the burbs. About the time we moved in, there was a father/son bank robbery in the area. They had a second vehicle waiting about a mile down the road from where we live. The two were stopped on the way to their other vehicle and ended up killing a cop. They made it to their other vehicle, and then took a wrong turn into a dead end street and were chased into a wooded area. They broke into a home, took the woman hostage and stole her van. They crashed the van into a big oak tree while trying to escape as the cops were firing at them. Thank goodness that the woman hostage was able to get away from the crash and crawl to safety. The big gunfight was about 1/2 mile from the home we just moved into.

This all happened in a community where a lot of people don't lock their doors.

About a month ago, we were woke up in the middle of the night by a big commotion we could hear about 2 blocks away. We could hear sirens, a booming voice on a loud speaker, gun shots, and then silence. There was absolutely nothing in the news about it. My husband works with a woman who lives a little bit closer to where all the noise was coming from, and she said that a vagrant had barracaded himself inside of a thrift store. She didn't know why or when the shots had been fired.

I just can't believe that all of this goes on in a neighborhood where it costs $500,000 to buy tiny house or condo.
I lived on Capitol Hill during the WTO riots. Watched the Battle for the Bridge from my living room window. Good times, good times.

Anyway, I now live in a much pricier neighborhood and we heard gunshots the other night. The the stream of emergency vehicles. Not one peep on the news.

I'm sure that if we pass more gun laws and/or outlaw guns totally, that none of this will ever happen again

I've lived in NYC, New Jersey, Jacksonville, and so many cities I literally can't remember them all and even some other countries...

Memories and stories like the above remind me I am glad I now live in a town with a population of 800 people.
