Refund Fraud

I had a client receive an email from what looked to be the IRS stating that they were intitled to a refund of $182.60. "Click here" to claim your refund and it asks for your name, social security number and other personal info. I have never had the IRS make initial contact by email and in the body of the email it uses u instead of you.

Be careful with your identity information.

This is why, when I get "suspicious" looking emails from supposed companies, I don't even open it, but right-click on the email, select Properties, click on the Details tab, and click Message Source. Maximize this window, and check out who it REALLY came from.

Then forward it to spam@uce.gov

Using this method, you can also read the entire email body (text), or see if it's actually html going to a website, and look at the code to see where your "click on this link" really takes you, etc. All this without ever actually opening the email. Because once you open the email, they know your email address is valid (then the spam begins)...

Remember, the IRS, banks, credit unions, etc NEVER ask you for personal info via email!

On their website, the IRS has an e-mail for you to forward these types of spam to.

"Rusty" (as if that's your real name), did you just end your sentence in a preposition? My lord, man.

That reminds me.........

A good ol Alabama boy received a scholarship to Harvard. His first day on campus, he walked up to a Senior and with his thick Southern drawl he politely asked, "Can you tell me where the library's at?

The Senior, in his snooty New England voice replied, "We, at Harvard, never end our sentences in a preposition."

The Alabama boy, embarrassed, replied, "Can I ask you again?"

"Of course," replied the Senior with a smirk on his face.

"Can you tell me where the library's at...........A$$hole?"

I got one of those a while back...I always check the email address to see if something is legit. If it's something from the government, it's not going to end in .com...it will most likely be .gov

I like the emails about the sum of money to be used for ministry or transferring funds into the country...

My rule of thumb is if it's something important it will be sent registered mail or just first class mail not e-mailed so I never click anything I didn't ask for.

Yep, my rules are simple: if THEY contact ME and it's about banking, etc, I won't talk to them. A couple of times I've gotten a call from 'the bank', taken down the persons name and which bank, then hung up, looked up the real banks number and asked to speak to that person.

They are impressed, saying it's nearly bulletproof to do it this way.

Rusty, I'm watching you, buddy!

I'm sorta "Compu-tarded" but I thought I'd give this a try. I can right click on an E-Mail and get the Properties box to "pop-up" but I can't find a Details tab or message source button. What gives?
