Bringing gun on plane trip?

First of all, for those of you that don't know, you can have a gun in your checked luggage with most airlines.

With that being said, I am flying out on Tuesday and I am going to bring my gun with me. I have checked with the airline I'm flying with (Allegiant Air) to see how I have to secure the firearm so I'm set there. I would like to hear of other people's experiences with bringing a firearm on a plane. Was there any unforeseen problems, did you bring ammo also, how much, if any, longer does it take to check in etc.?

I flew with a handgun in my checked luggage from Houston to Omaha and then back. I didn't have any troubles at either airport. It took about 5 minutes longer than normal if that. They just had to make sure it was locked and not loaded. I also had a couple boxes of ammo. I think you could take up to like 10 pounds or something.

No problems. Took 2 boxes of ammo, weight limit of ammo was 11 lbs IIRC

Just a tip, just check with the airlines website before hand and print 2 copies of thier rules! Keep one copy with your firearm and one with your tickets. Different airlines differ and the TSA guys sometimes don't know whitch rule goes with which airline.

Every time I've flown on on leave for the last two years I've flown with my CC piece and a few times with that and my AR.

Word of advice. Get a good hardsided case. I'm about to purchase a pelican case that will handle both my CC piece and my AR broken into upper and lower along with 3 mags for each.

You need to make it as hard as possible for the baggage handlers to get to your weapon.

The stock SA case sucks something awful but it is possible to modify it to lock it up securely by using two locks.

Every time I've had no real problems. Except for once it got put on the wrong plane and wound up at my airport 6 hrs late.

Edit-I also always fly with my SD ammo. Just make sure it's stored in factory style boxes (reloading boxes work also). Also there is a 10 or 11 lb weight limit as someone mentioned earlier. The ammo DOES NOT have to be locked in a case it can be in your regular luggage unlocked.

Flown several times in and out of O'Hare (this is for people that worry about going through Chicago) with my firearm. Never had a problem. Had over the stated aweight amount for ammunition but it was in two bags. Not even a hassle. Stayed with my bag until released by TSA just in case they wanted to check the firearm. Didn't want them to hold it or cut off the lock when I could give them the keys.

Did you check the hard sided case by itself or was it in another bag? I am going to put the hard sided case into my other luggage.

When I used the small cases yes I did just make sure the TSA rep also checks the bag you are storing it in. When I used the large case I checked it as it's own bag. When I get the Pelican case it will also go as it's own bag. I usually don't bring a whole lot of baggage with me so it's not a big deal for me to use one of my checked bag allowances for my case.

I've never had any trouble, open the case, show empty, lock it back up with the red card inside. I do hang around in case the TSA guys decide they need to open it again.

Did you put your ammo in the hard sided case or just in your luggage?
