Don't forget, it must be a hard sided case. It is quite embarrassing to have to have one of the airlines people drive you to the local sporting goods store because you packed it the soft sided range bag that it lives in and someone dropped you off at the airport. And don't have a nice ultralight knife clipped in your pants either, they just throw them in the trash. I've lost more than a few knives that way.

The more relaxed you are the more relaxed they are. If you are going to bring a bunch of ammo (say 400 rounds of 230 grn .45) it isn't going to make the weight limit, so I've found putting it in a big bag helps. If the bag looks big, they don't mind so much if it is heavy. If it is small and weighs a lot, they tend to ask more questions.

Oh, BTW I'm sitting in the airport waiting for a connecting flight to a match in AZ tomorrow

Good luck on your trip!

My only concern would be if you pack your pistol in a separate case. Hard sided cases beg to be stolen by people.

I can't speak for any other airports, but the baggage claim at PHL is like a theives' candy store. I've never been checked when I picked up my bags to leave the airport, so I have to assume any individual that wanders in and hangs out for a while could walk up and pick up any bags he felt like and wander off with your gun.

that being said... I think it would be smart to pack (after TSA checks it) your locked hard sided case in one of your larger suitcases or pieces of luggage.

Hardly anyone will steal an ordinary piece of luggage because nobody wants your dirty laundry and deodorant.

That's exactly what I was planning on doing. I wouldn't risk checking the hard sided case as a piece of luggage.

I'll throw the Pelican or Storm case in here again.

I really like Alaska Airlines. They give you up to 50lbs of ammo. Some airlines may differ, but I've always been allowed to put all of my ammo in the case with the guns. You're even allowed to have loaded mags as long as they have covers or are in mag carriers.

I've only had one problem in flying several times, and that was when I had a stupid hippie chick checking me in at the Anchorage Airport. She said that my ammo and guns were not legal in the same container, and became quite indignant when I pulled a printout from her company's website out of my rifle case that unequivocally stated it was permissible. Then she said "well, I think it's a TSA rule." So I pull the printout from the TSA website out (be sure to have both, just in case of this.) She passed me off to a supervisor at that point, and the supervisor was really cool. Besides that, I've never had an issue. You just need to make sure you have two copies each of the Airline and TSA regulations, and be sure to stick around while they screen your bag.

Here is another thread on this topic, complete with a poll.

How do you transport your firearm when flying?
