Big Bros. Big Sisters agency view on guns?
A coworker and friend asked me for a donation for some bowling fund raiser thing to benefit the big brothers & big sisters organization. I remember finding her application in the fax machine and returning it to her a few months ago. On the way to her desk I noticed one of the questions on the 1 page application was something like "do you own any guns?" There may have been more than one gun related question but I didn't want to read the whole thing since it wasn't mine.
Anyone know 1.) If the kids are allowed in your house and 2.) if owning a gun automatically disqualifies you from becoming a big brother/sister? I have mixed feelings. If answering yes leads to them asking if you store them in a safe place then I don't mind. If it disqualifies you or if the kids aren't even allowed in your house then it's BS and they can take a flying crap before I donate.

I am a big brother and I have guns. When they asked me if I own any guns they just asked that they be locked up when my Little would be in my house. I also carry my gun whenever I am with my Little. I am in charge of his safety whenever we a together, and I believe that if I carry a gun for my safety then I should carry it for his safety. I don't know if the BBBS org agrees with me, but I haven't read anything that would stop me from carrying.

Making sure the kids are safe is cool as long as they realize you can be responsible and own a gun. Too many people think that's impossible for some reason. Thanks for the info. I'm going to make a nice donation to her.

I doubt very much they are anti-gun, it's just them checking all their boxes. Lots of liability for the organization and it's in their best interest to keep kids safe.
In Dallas the North Texas BBBS group hosts TWO sporting clays tournaments in Dallas (Elm Fork) and Fort Worth (Alpine). Great event and any DFW shooters should attend next fall. |
