Very unfortunate...

Husband Mistakes Wife For Intruder, Kills Her
NATCHEZ, Miss. -- A Natchez man shot and killed his wife when he mistook her for an intruder in their home, according to police.
Police Chief Mike Mullins said Glenn and Deborah Mizell awoke around 4 a.m. Tuesday to the sound of their barking dog. Mullins said Glenn Mizell went to investigate, taking a pistol with him.
Mullins said Glenn Mizell began checking through the house and was unaware his wife had left the bedroom and gone into the kitchen. Mullins said when Mizell saw her figure in the dark, he fired his gun once.

Authorities said he shot Deborah Mizell, 49, once in the chest and died at the scene.
Mullins said a preliminary investigation shows the shooting was an accident.
Perfect example of why you should discuss with your family what everyone's actions should be in the event of a suspected break in. Very unfortunate accident. I'd hate to have to go through what he's probably going through right now.

I think he over reacted and obviously shot before he identified the threat. If he would have given a verbal command to "stop", "freeze" or something to that effect this wouldn't even be a story right now.

Words cannot describe what that guy must be feeling. Hopefully someone is around to make sure he doesn't off himself, too...

whatever happened to "know your target" ?

its a shame, but this is a prime reason why you account for everyone BEFORE you start shooting inside your home.

+1. The reason why a flashlight should be attached or next to your firearm. Why I feel sorry for the guy theres really no excuse. When will gun owners realize that ownership carries much responsiblity.

my wife's college roomie was killed by her BF in a similar accident.

she was supposed to be out of town for a trip, but instead stayed home to surprise him for his birthday. she hid in the closet & was going to jump out w/ some birthday accoutrements.

upon arriving home, the BF heard something in the closet. he got his pistol & went to check the noise. she jumped out & he shot her..

bad deal!

So, if I want to murder my wife, I just shoot her once in the chest at 4AM and make up the old burglar-in-the-dark story?

Not trying to be funny, how often does this happen?

I was thinking the same thing. At least I'm not the only warped one here.
