Unfair deer "hunting"
I was talking to my sister tonight who lives in Michigan. The deer population where she lives is quite large. Despite this seeming glut of deer, she was telling me that some people in her area lure deer into their backyards with apples and carrots and then shoot them. This has to be one of the most inhumane things I have ever heard of. I thought hunting was a "sport," a challenge to test your skills of tracking and shooting accuracy. What kind of test is it to shoot an animal eating in your backyard??
Apparently, some people are equally disgusted by the practice and are setting off firecrackers to scare the animals away. My sister overheard a couple of people discussing the firecracker people at the grocery store today. One of the them seemed to be threatening bodily harm to the people setting off the firecrackers. I hope the people keep setting off the firecrackers. How can anyone feel good about shooting an animal under those unfair conditions?

It happens a lot and I'm not really against it. It's not like they didn't get their fix during hunting season and need to kill more, just some families are much larger and one animal doesn't suffice.

Hunting is, by nature a primal endeavor.
Something that brings us back to our most basic roots. Do you think that primitive man would have hesitated to lure in animals with the promise of food? Would this make him any less of a sportsman or a man? No, it means he would have been the one that was able to survive the long winter by getting more food. If they're hunting legally, I really don't care how they do it.

So, you think it's an economic issue of wanting to feed your family? My sister seems to think that many of these hunters get their jollies out of killing animals.

disprite the fact that what they are doing is a discrace to the real hunters that earn there kills. sometimes there needs to be a thining out of the deer population or other animals and if fish and game in my state came to the citizens to help them thin and i could do it safely and if it was for some good i would do it.
but to do it as a form of "hunting" i think is wrong and is in no way hunting the deer deserve better then that |

I can't honestly say yes 100% thats why they do it. There are some out there that do hunt legal or not for shear thrill of killing an animal. But around where I hunt we do have a lot of private property killings when animals come in to feed at night. Yes it's still illegal even though it's your property but it does happen and yes it is strictly for food. But like I said thats around my town I can say why people do what they do around your sisters place.

Why is the deer population so out of kilter in so many places? It seems to be that their natural predators have been killed or hunted almost out of existence in certain places and so the deer have run rampant. This is not a natural balance.

I don't agree that that is the proper reason to hunt, but because we have no way to distinguish between those that legitimately have a want or need for venison or other meat, or pelts, or trophies, and those who are simply malicious killers we can't really deny them tags.

One reason I've read a lot is that theres a huge decrease in hunters these days.

There are a couple of issues here. 1. There are people in this country that still hunt to feed their families. 2. What is the difference between this and putting up 6 tree stands around a field plot grown in to entice deer? Does your sister hunt?
