CCW and your children
My wife and I had our first child 3 months ago. We are both CCW permit holders and carry even in our own home.
A questions for those of you with kids. How would you keep an 8 year old child from telling all of their friends, teachers, friends parents or any one else that Mommy and Daddy carry guns? This is not a gun/child safety question. I will have the safety talk and lessons but how do you keep your own child from ratting you out? I have a few years to think about it, but someone else out there must have thought the same thing.

Talk to them about firearms safty and include the fact that we don't tell others about our guns. Let them know it is a "family secret." That may work.
Having taught children and worked with them especially in church, let me assure you that children talking about your guns are the least of your worries. They will tell their teachers everything they hear and see! |

That is something you would have to worry about way before 8 yrs old. An 8 yr old brought up in a, what I would call a pro-gun family, would know better. Around 4 or 5 is when they would start saying stuff like that but I started young. My daughter is 5 and she knows about guns, safety, even hunting and why we hunt (not for sport but for food). I think when they are old enough to hold a conversion with you you need to start. I'm not expert though.

I taught sunday school for 8 years. I'd say by four you need to worry about it. From my experience of only being 8 13 years ago... I would say a "secret" is guarenteed to be told to the best friends, which is a serious concern. I'd just say you don't tell people for the same reason you don't tell people how much money you have, its just not the right thing to do.

I agree it starts before 8 years old, I was only using it as a random number. I grew up around guns and hunting as well and I never talked to anyone else about it. But my Father did not carry a gun. I don't know if that would of changed things.

My two kids, ages 6 and 8, have been around guns their entire lives. So they knew, even before they understood, that daddy carries a gun, and it has never been a big deal for them. Ever since they could talk, I have told them that while there is nothing wrong with owning or carrying guns, that we own them and carry them is just something that we do not discuss with strangers. They've been told that people can sometimes be silly, and react in stupid ways if they know that someone near them is carrying a gun.
They've been very good about not saying anything about it...but then again, maybe it's because they're girls. Boys, I think, may be more prone to bragging about it. |

Koda-xd;
It's not about telling them I carry, I open carry at home, or at least don't wear my cover garmet. So my question was about them seeing Daddy with a gun and them not telling someone else.
