What would you do? (not self-defense related or anything)
Just wondering if any of you would have done anything in this situation.
Yesterday as I pulled into my driveway from work, I could see something going on way down the street. It was a fight between two young kids. Maybe early junior high just based solely on size because it was a ways away. I could just make out one throw down the other onto the ground, jump on top of him and start wailing on him. There were lots of other kids gathered around and it appeared that an adult got out of a car and started to walk towards them but then he stopped and just stood there watching. My first instinct when I see a fight is to call the cops. However in this case I was on the fence. On one hand it seems like getting in fights as a kid is part of growing up. On the other hand these days some kids are just crazy and it seems like other kids will let them go to greater and more dangerous extremes with each other without stepping in. I didn't call the cops, I just went into my house with the hope that the adult that was down there would do the responsible thing and break them up. I don't feel real solid about that decision but that's what I did. Would you have done the same as me or would you have taken some kind of action? brad cook

I would have stepped inside, got the cordless phone and called the pd then act as witness informing dispatch of anything they wanted to know. Let the cops sort it out.

I think I'd have had to say something and then whip out the cellular. I only hear stories of how it once was, but I know how it is now. I was the geeky guy that couldn't have won a fight if his life depended on it, and I feel that these days, your life may just well depend on it. (For the record, I've only been out of grade school for a few years). I get the idea that back in the day, a fight was a fight, someone got a black eye or so, and that was it. I know for a fact that it isn't that way anymore (if it ever was). Kids now are crazy. They'll kill someone because they want their jacket or shoes. They have no concept of repurcussions or consequences. They've been told all their life that nothing is their fault.
Oops...got on the soap box. Anyway, I'd have done something...not sure what, but something...

Depends on the type of fight. If it was one kid getting the crap beat out of him by a group of kids then I probably would've stepped in. Other than that I'd probably call the cops and let them go at it.
I agree that these days, fights can get out of hand in a hurry. Kids feel they need to bring a weapon into the mix then someone really gets hurt.

i would have walked over and been a witness.
when they were done fighting i would have grabbed them both by their collars and made them shake hands.... the way it should be done. i would explain to them that if they had a dissagreeance that lead to a fight then it all ended with the fight... the way it should be. its a part of life. its stupid, but lifes not perfect. |

tough call. Things are not like they used to be where you took your differences outside, beat the crap out of each other but after that, you were friends again and life went on. I would have gone down and checked what it was about and then made a decision from that. if it was just a 1 on 1 like we used to do, then let em at it. But if it was a group attacking 1 then I would step in.

A lady I used to work with pulled up to her son's school one afternoon to pick the kid up. When she got there another kid a couple of grades ahead of her son had her son's shoulders pinned to the ground with his knees and was pounding her kid's face with his fists. Her son was bleeding and screaming. She jumped from the car, grabbed her son's assailant by the arm and threw him off her son and took her son to the car. Luckily the kid had no injuries that needed medical attention.
Two weeks later deputies showed up at work to arrest this lady for assault on a minor, because she grabbed this other kid, a known bully, that was beating the doo-doo out of her child. The case was laughed out of court, but the lady still missed several days work and had to pay a lawyer. Don't touch kids that don't belong to you, unless it looks like somebody's going to die. bd |
