Das Boot! (pics)

For those who don't know, I work on a boat. Well, I was recently transfered to a new position.. I was a full time Ferryman, now I am a relief Ferry Operator. What that means to the layman, is really nothing.. LOL.. I work the bridge crew during the winter, during the summer, I am the Captain of the mighty Buena Vista Ferry!!

This is the view you would see if you were boarding from the West side.

on the left is the machine room, on the right is the Operators cabin.

In the machine room, you will find the power plant. Every sailor, and gun-totin' hunter knows.. nothing runs like a Deere!

On the left is a view of the control panels. Once you have mastered these controls, you are actually qualified to fly the Space Shuttle! On the right is just some picture I snapped looking South from the West landing.

Finally, here is a picture of a local hauling what appears to be a homemade plow to his fields on the West side. You know.. most farmers, you can't get to shut-up.. I have a hard time getting this guy to talk.. he says a lot of things like "yep." and "could be.." I have yet to figure out where his fields are.. but I have all summer, and I am patient.

Anyway, that is how I am spending my summer. The Ferry opened the first Wednesday of April, and closes the last Wednesday of October. It's not a commuter ferry like the other Ferry I work on. It's very slow paced.. it's not uncommon to ferry more bicycles than vehicles in a day. The farmers love it, because it saves them a 15 mile drive to get to the Independence bridge.. other than that, it is primarily a tourist attraction.

For years I made it my hobby, and objective, to ride all of the ferrys on the eatern seaboard. I achieved my objective in 1995 after I had already moved to the midwest. If I ever decide to start trying the west coast, I'll let you know.

A secondary hobby has been visiting all of the Albanys in the country, but that one goes much slower even if it does put you close to my agenda.

Please do!

This ferry is not like the ones you are probably used to. It is cable guided.. meaning I am tethered to a cable, and have two props for propulsion. I don't know that the East Coast has any similar operations. In Oregon, there are three cable guided Ferry', I believe there is one in Minnesota somewhere.. other than that, I don't know of any powered, cable guided ferry that shuttles traffic.

...so, you don't need any really sophisticated guidance systems so you don't get lost then?...

That actually looks pretty cool, and if it is a tourist attraction, I am sure you get to meet lot's of folks!

I have the original uncut german version video with sub-titles. Great movie. I was lucky enough to know a man who was a U-boat crewman in the Kriegsmarine during WWII. He had interesting storries to tell, when he was in the mood. Nice guy, passed away a while back. You got to admit, the germans did build them right back then. Most modern designs can be traced back to german U-boats.

BTW, where are the torpedo tubes on yours?

So Ray, what does it cost a citizen to get from point A to Point B?

We used to cross the Mississippi on a small ferry somewhere in Missouri.....my rectum stayed puckered the entire time. Water sloshing up on the deck, big assed boats goin' by....... A sailor I ain't.
