New 22-250

I just bought a Howa 1500 22-250. It came with a Leupold vx-1 4x12 scope. I haven't ever been varmint (rabbit) hunting with anything other than my .22 before. I bought this for long distance rabbit hunting, and for coyotes and such. Is this 4X12 going to be powerful enough to get shots off at a coyote, or do I need to get something with a bit more oomph? If so, do you guys have any suggestions? Thanks, in advance.

Come on guys. All you blood thirsty, gun toting republicans here and no one can tell me if I need a different scope?! There has to be some one with an opinion on this matter.

More power doesn't mean a better shot. Military snipers use a 10x fixed. The higher the power, the harder it will be to hold it steady. But for rabbits and coyotes, it should be fine. If it was prarie dogs at 600+, you might want more power. And you'd want something a lot better than a VX1.

That rig is more than likely able to shoot better than you.

Congrats and have fun with it

I knew that there was someone with an opinion one way or another. Thanks guys. The VX-1 is what came with it. I tried to talk them into letting me upgrade while I was there, but the guy said it was a package and didn't want to make a couple hundered extra bucks, I guess. Oh well. I guess I'll just see how this one works and go from there. Thanks again guys. I really do appreciate it.

The 22-250 is perfect for coyotes. I use a 22-250 or 243 for most of my coyote hunting and I notice very little difference in stopping power between the two.

My 22-250 is a custom rifle built on a 1935 German Mauser action with a 26" full bull Reitz (German) barrel, Fajen beavertail walnut stock and Jeager trigger. A Leupold 6x18x40mm scope sits on a Leupold base/rings set up. The rig weighs about 13 pounds and has almost no recoil. I usually set it up on a Harris Bi-pod and don't carry it around on foot very long. 200yd groups are well under 2 inches, but I have never measured them. This is one custom job that I spent way too much money on but its unique and a tackhammer and I'll never part with it!

Dad has a Thomson Center Encore in 22-250 and I have borrowed it several times. Another great shooter that is very accurate.

I really like the Hornady 55gr V-max bullets for the 22-250. Every rifle "likes" a certain round so your may be different.

The amazing thing about the 22-250 is the wounds the caliber inflicts. The exit cavities are...well...impressive. I would NOT shoot ANYTHING I was planning on eating with this caliber. The meat damage is explosive. It is NOT a good choice for deer, I don't care what anybody says.

The bullets are too light and don't have the energy to cleanly drop big critters like whitetail deer and pigs. I really think the 100gr 243 is pushing it for deer past 100 yards, but somebody out there somewhere will tell you THEY hunt deer with a 22-250 or even a 223 all the time. Won't catch me doing that. Thats what the 30-06 and 270 are for.

Welcome to the 22-250. You'll love it. Very effective, flat shooting and accurate as can be. I really think the 22-250 is the best thing in the 22 centerfire class.

The guys I see shooting .22-250's at the range who reload tend to shoot groups that are 3/8" at 100 yards.

Shoot the rig, get used to it, then should you decide to upgrade the scope, do it, but be sure to use very high quality base and rings.

When I outfitted my 700PSS .308, I asked an old guy at the gun store (a real gun store) what base and rings go best w/ my high end Leupold scope... I was shocked at the price of the base/rings but got it anyway.

I can and have DROPPED this rifle/scope and it doesn't change zero, it has never changed zero. Yeah, baby!

You are going to love the .22-250, it's a rockem' sockem' varmit round.
