Any Volunteers here?
I was just wondering if any of you belonging to this forum do any volunteer work for your church, community, etc. I think it would be interesting to see what kind of volunteer work is done by our members around this great country of ours. This is not to brag but maybe it will give us a better understanding of this forum community we live in... And maybe some of us (especially us "older dogs") are looking for something to volunteer at in order to 'give back' to our physical/spiritual communities....
I guess I have to start. I am retired. I volunteer as a 'lector' on Sundays at my church. For those of you who are non-Catholics, that means I read a passage from the Old and New Testaments during our service (Mass), in preparation for the celebration of the Eucharist. I am presently enrolled in a ten week course (one day a week) in order to become a Hospice volunteer. My mother-in-law lived with us, was diagnosed with cancer last February, and passed away last June. Her wishes were to remain at home to the end - no tubes, no hospitals, no tests. She wanted to die surrounded by "people who love me". And she did. I loved her dearly. Hospice helped us towards the end (helped us keep her clean, comfortable and pain-free) and they were great. Hospice is not a particular place but a way of helping people LIVE their last weeks or months of life as fully as possible, right up to the end. If anyone is looking for something worthwhile to volunteer at, I suggest you give this a look-see. |

I'm active in my American Legion Post. We're always doing something to raise money to fund our programs that benefit Veterans and youth in our community.

There may even be a worse case: you fight with no hope of victory, because it is better to perish as warriors than to live as slaves. |

My wife and I both are involved in a ton of stuff at our church. From teaching, to music, cooking for large events, to assisting with web development. The church also keep a 2 mile section of the main road cleared of trash, and do several community volunteer programs with a variety of different things which we get involved with from time to time.
I was a volunteer EMT before I moved to MI and my license didn't transfer, so I don't do that now. plus my new job hours would make it tough to be available for call, and my current area is much more full and part time onsite guys. Back home it was all volunteers responding on pagers and I was on a crew with my dad. It was funny this week, pastor saw a web page I am working on for the school and he hadn't heard about it (meaning no one had gotten approval to pay for it) and he asked if I was "making it a ministry" I laughed and said I wasn't keeping track of my hours if thats what he was asking...

I volunteer for the VA, although if the Board of Pharmacy has their way in NC, that will stop.

I do the same thing for the VFW. Nineteen consecutive years with the "Buddy Poppy" campaign.
