Assault-weapon attacks on rise in Miami area where officer slain
MIAMI (AP) -- The spray of bullets that killed one Miami-Dade County police officer and hurt three others came from something increasingly common on the city's streets.
High-powered assault weapons like the one believed to have been used in yesterday's attack are becoming the guns of choice for gang members and other violent criminals. In 2005, the Miami-Dade Police Department reported two homicides involving an assault rifle; by last year there were 10. The department says 15 of its 79 homicides last year involved assault weapons, up from the year before. This year, already 12 of the 60 homicides have involved the high-power guns. Carlos Baixauli is a Miami-based special agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He says the numbers reflect growing availability of the weapons and their elevation to a status symbol among gang members. He adds that the guns are readily available on streets or can be ordered by mail for under $200. I haven't even seen a thread on here about the officer that was slain in the line of duty http://www1.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/MI61460/ Here is the full story. It is a tragic situation and then the ATF comes out with a crazy statement like this one. $200 dollar assault rifles by mail? Sign me up. Seriously this guy does not even know the laws he is supposed to be enforcing. Since 1968 the only guns you can buy through the mail are antiques and replicas. http://www1.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/MI61578/ the link to the assault weapon story. Whatever an assault weapon is.

WSVN in Miami has long been know as the "Sensation Station." Rick Sanchez, now on CNN, was an anchor there for many years and about the best at making a mountain out of a molehill. Watching him on CNN I can see he still hasn't lost his touch. He's a POS in my book. FYI, a thread was posted yesterday on the murder/shootings.

WSVN7 - along with most other news stations in the greater Miami area - are just pure garbage aimed at getting people riled up over nothing and getting better ratings. 'Sensation Station' is certainly appropriate.
Also, from the first link (and in no way am I defending this guy or his motives at all, either).. "Labeet, who may have been wearing a bulletproof vest, fled in his car..." - why would this matter, let alone be mentioned if it wasn't for stirring the pot? Sure it's pretty tough and in many cases not legal for civ's to purchase high-grade forms of body protection, but certainly it's not illegal to wear them, is it? Why is that even an issue here in this story?

If ya ever meet him ask him about his drunk driving incident involving a pedestrian at a Dolphin game.

The Miami Herald has reported that the deceased cop killer Labeet purchased six assault rifles and a few pistols by using an alias. The alias being the identity of someone else who lives in Jacksonville, FL; case of stolen identity. I guess there is a lesson to be learned here, check suspicious activity regarding ID (check credit report, report lost cards, etc.).
May the Officer RIP and God bless his family! |
