strange morning

Man, someone tried to break into my sisters friends house. I didn't run over with a gun or anything but it opened my eyes a bit.

I think you did damn good. You used good common sense and you did what you could when it was needed. Very few altercations or threats rise to the level of deadly force.

If this one did, then blah blah blah. It didn't and wasn't likely to. You did what you could and your presence was very helpful to all concerned. I think you did great.

I was woken up at 6:03 this morning with my little sister hysterical on the other end. Her and I live together but she stayed with a friend last night. She says someone keeps banging on the door and trying to get into her friends apartment and she's obviously terrified. So I tell her to call the cops and I'm on my way. I don't know EXACTLY where the apartment is but I have friends that live close by and so I figure I can head to the area and I tell her that as soon as she gets off the phone with 911 to call me to give me exact directions.

Here's where the trouble starts.. I throw on jeans, a t-shirt and some shoes and grab my knife and head out the garage only to find out her car is parked behind mine and I'm stuck. So I run inside and grab the girlfriends keys and hurry to her car.

My sister calls and tells me how to get to where she's located and I'm headed that direction... I was speeding I will admit (55-60in a 45) and I know thats illegal but really... who here hasn't sped?

My Dad calls and he's also frantic and asks if I've got my gun. I tell him no. (I turned 21 in May and quite frankly haven't had the funds to get my ccl yet) So not only do I have no ccl but the gun is a 9mm tactical made for ipsc with a 2.5-3 lb trigger. I know I'd be f'd if I took it which is exactly why I only took a knife.

To my surprise he's mad and says. "Gd'it Eric why don't you have your gun?!" lol Please don't judge my Dad on this he's never condoned any kind of illegal carry but at that moment he was VERY stressed because his baby girl was potentially in trouble and he was 45 miles away with no way to help. I gave him my reason and he says something along the lines of, "You're way smarter than me".

I get to where my sister told me to go and as it turns out she gave me bad directions. TERRIBLY inconventient especially given the circumstances, but on the same ticket given the circumstances entirely understandable. I call her to get better directions and show up about the same times as le. She tells me they beat me by about 30-45 seconds...

They tell my sister and her friend that a "dopehead" used to live in that exact same apartment and that they've been called to its location on a few seperate occasions.

A few minutes later LE leaves and I tell the girls to come to my house and stay there until they have to go to class. As I'm waiting for them to get their stuff ready I decide to walk around just outside the door to see if I notice anything and I start calling my Dad.

Then before I can dial his number a man that I'd guess to be 45 years old or so comes around the corner and is about 5 feet away from me he gets stuck like a deer in the headlights so I immediatly assume its the person who was beating on the door and he's returned and didn't expect me to be there.

For some reason I felt the fitting thing to say to be "whats going on?" lol
To which he replied "Not allot" as he's still obviously shocked that I'm there. The whole time I never act aggressive because if he is the guy causing all the commotion I don't want to instigate anything and for that matter I'm not even sure he's not there to check on the girls too. So I stay between him and the door and ask if I can help him and he says my sisters friends name. I told him to wait just a second, ask him his name and tell the girl who it is. She says it's ok and he comes in. Apparently it was some relative that her Mom called that lived relatively close.

So... everything turned out good except for the fact that I was caught nearly 150% with my pants down.

Please do not think I am some young punk renegade but I wish that for that situation I would have had atleast some good pepperspray and to be honest my ccl.

I've been to the complex that my sister originally told me to go to and at those apartments there is no covered parking and you can drive right up in front of the apt doors and see. Knowing this; my intentions were to just drive up and flash my brights/honk/use the vehicle as my #1 resource to try to scare whoever was there away and never get out of the car unless fully necessary because there's no reason to put myself in a bad situation when those girls are behind a good solid door with 3 locks.

Too bad that at the apt that they were actually at you can't see the door's and I would have had to leave the car.. luckily that wasn't needed as LE showed up about the same time as me.

So to sum up the story.. and I say this with great reserve because I truly do not want you guys to think of me as some wanna be shooter hero guy because thats not how it is. However I think it is time to for sure at the very least get some good pepperspray and then find out when the next ccl course will be held here. Then of course I'll have to find a suitable carry gun/method.

I've known all along that something could happen but I've never taken the proper steps to be prepared. So to wrap this up (I know I could do a search but I'm going to assume some of you will reply to this thread anyways) so as you do as such. Could any of you gentlemen please reccomend some good pepperspray that I can get for my sister, girlfriend and myself?

Once again please please don't think I'm some hothead out looking for a fight.. but it is my right to protect myself and others and thats all I want to do.

Anyways, thanks in advance for any help.

Gantz
That'll do I wouldn't have carried a gun either under your circumstances. I would have grabbed my hockey stick instead of a knife though because I am more familiar with the intimate workings of that weapon. I don't think you got caught with your pants down, you thought it through and made the right decision. Kudos.

Well thanks... I did my best to not be an idiot.

I went to grab my baseball bat only to remember that I loaned it to my old roomate/buddy for a softball league he's been playing in.

I had my sword that my buddies got to mess around with.. Believe it or not it's kinda fun to toss potatoes at eachother and chop them in the air lol. I figured that'd get me into almost as much trouble as the gun so I left it too.

I know most encounters don't escalate to anything life threatening but I'm still going to find out about the next ccl course because as cliche as it sounds... better safe than sorry. On that note I don't necessarily mean for this morning, just in general. I mean is that not the same reason the rest of you carry?

Thanks for the responses!

Gantz

I think you did a great job and in no way came across as a renegade. Just b/c you wanted to have your gun with you does not make you a renegade. A renegade is when you carry it around, legally or not, looking for trouble. You were responding to a family member in need. Now, go get your CCL.

Trust me, thats the plan.

I'm thinking of either a 9mm SC or a .45 compact. Not sure which. Sadly around here there's not much when it comes to looking past Academy and Gander Mtn.

There's a gunshow October 12th'ish so I guess I'll be cheap for the next month to make a new gun more affordable... Then I gotta find a good holster/belt too.

For some reason I don't foresee this as being an easy thing lol...
