Same version of windows huh? If I can remember correctly schools purchase a bulk ID for their computers from microsoft. They can download that version to as many computers as the wish. Transponder, yeah, they put those in the aircards for the laptops you can borrow during class. So if they do get stolen they can find it.

If I was the kid that stole it. I would wipe her down and throw it in a dumpster. Oh yeah. And make sure as hell you don't get a 100% on your next exam!

The Profs ass is in a sling for leaving the thing where it can be stolen. He will never be a consultant again. I doubt that it was being tracked. I would guess it was all scare tactics while the prof was sweating bullets. He would be the first to be investigated by all of those agancies to ensure that the computer had really been stolen.

Good point.

They do have transponders in them though. My sister works in the computer lab at OU. She can't track the computers but the administrators can. She hands out 20-30 laptops to students the few hours shes there, and the students can take them anywhere on campus. How esle would they find them? HEY! FREE COMPUTERS!

I'm still calling BS. If there WAS a transponder and a partial image of the thief AND 2 witnesses AND they had actually tracked the computer to a couple of points on Campus the thief would have already been grabbed. PLUS, if any of it was true then he just told the thief what he needed to do to keep from getting caught.

The truth is the prof was probably panicking because of some PRIVATE material on his laptop.

The link to the video has Berkeley in it. Just did a search on stolen laptop, U.C. Berkeley. Tons of articles on a laptop theft from there on March 11 of this year.
I'm assuming (dangerous thing assuming) that this is the laptop in question.

The laptop had Social Security Numbers and info on 100,000 people.. By California law they have to find and notify every one of these people. Of the dozens of articles on this, none of them that I scanned report any info on finding the laptop or the culprit.

The profs cojenes are on the line for having unencrypted info on his machine. According to one article, the names were downloaded the day before encryption software was to be installed. (wink wink nod nod).

I wonder if he has to find all 100,000 people? Postage alone is $37,000!

Best bet for the theif is to destroy the laptop. It is the prof who is most likely screwed at that point. If he actually knew who did it he wouldn't have to make a statement like this. Finding you with the laptop is probably the only way they can catch the guy.

Ok private eye!

Transponders aren't like the ones you see on tv where they have a computer screen with a flashing dot telling where the computer/person is. When the computer boots up and down it sends a signal of the location, and if the computer signs on to the internet then it sends a signal. Your not tracking foot steps these locations could be miles, hours, even days apart.

Student records would have you soc number on it. Plus some schools use your Soc number as a student number.
