Researching someone before a purchase
I may be a little paranoid but only because ive been seeing some pretty harsh scams lately on other forums and I just don't want to fall victim(knock on wood).
But here's the deal, I have a deal locked up right now pending my payment but before hand id like to verify that this guy is who he says he is, James E. Pitts. He says he's a LEO for Rosewell, GA Police Dept. Now, would I be out of place to call this dept. to verify this guy is indeed employed with them? No red flags have went up or anything that I've noticed except for maybe the price that im paying, ($465 shipped for a Remington 870P with a 2 shot mag extension and Wilson track lock tritium night sights, tac star 4 shot side saddle) and that he would prefer not going through his FFL to ship the shotgun to cut down on costs, which is understandable. I've always lived by "if its to good to be true it usually isn't" but then again he may be a LEO that gets LEO deals and is just passing it on. I don't know... Do you think I should just leave out the call to the dept. and maybe just get his land line home phone # and home address and call it good? Am I being paranoid? Or just smart? Your thoughts?

Yeah, I was under the impression that long guns could be shipped within a person's state without FFL, but to ship out of state requres FFL

Yes. It is.
The only way I can get something delivered directly to me is if it is C&R eligible and it went through a purchase on my 03 license. Everything else MUST go through FFL/FFL if it crosses state lines.

No, you wouldn't be out of place...
You could call his department and ask if he's there, or ask when the best time is to reach him. If he is then you could speak with him over the phone, if he doesn't work there then that'll be your red flag. Personally, I prefer talking to someone over the phone. Many times you can tell more about a person over the phone than you can through well constructed and edited emails.

What does C&R eligible mean? Another exception is that the CMP can ship long guns directly to purchasers.

Heres exactly what was said :
Me: 'Great!! So will you be shipping the shotgun through your FFL? If so, I will need your FFL's fax number so my FFL can prove he is licenced as well as give his shipping address.: His reply: "Would prefer a private ship..and I will include my POlice ID and copy of my DL. It cost me $25 additional + shipping for FFL transfer. If you can scan and EMAIL your FFL info thats all I need."

Whether it's legal or not is an issue. And, he's willing to ship a shotgun to ANYONE with $. Real freaking nice.
I wouldn't trust someone like that as far as I can spit. Never mind, he's sending it to your FFL? Get his ID first.
