cleaning in a "practical" manner
ok so i bought one of those bore snakes a little while back to facilitate in barrel cleaning. but i sort of thought to myself, hell i'm not trying to hit a bullseye 10/10 at 25 yards... i'm trying to save my life if necessary, which, according to what i read here with a grain of salt, is approximately a handful of shots in a handful of seconds within a handful of yards. which got me to thinkin, i pay a lot of attention to the cleanliness of my barrel, but which parts of my xd do i want to make sure are in spic and span order to make sure it'll work when i need it to?

Sounds like you've just explained why you should thoroughly clean every single part you can get to, regularly.

The instruction manual has general cleaning directions, follow those and you should be fine.

I usually clean my gun while still at the range so it will be ready to go for the trip home. One of those little "travel cleaning kits" fit right in my range bag. Keep your oil rag in a ziplock or you'll have it everywhere. Of course while cleaning I keep my BUG handy, too. -Zett |

Keep it clean! Ayoob has written about all kinds of dirty prosecutorial tricks--including making you look irresponsible and whatever else as evidenced by shooting somebody with that dirty, uncared for gun. You must be shoot-happy, always shooting, never cleaning. Just couldn't wait to pull the trigger on a BG, could ya? Not that it would make or break a case, but it's ammo that the prosecutor doesn't need. The police keep their guns clean, so should you.
