Finally finished my Springfield 1911 WWII GI model.

Wilson trigger and Wilson bullet-proof extractor
S&A blued magwell, Stainless grip safety.
Nowlin Speed trigger component group. Lite weight hammer, hardened sear and disconnector. 15lb mainspring
EGW full length guide rod and plug (SS)
Springfield ambidextrous safety (SS)
S&A Rosewood thing grips.
Heinie sites milled in and installed.

Before the mods, it did about 3" at 25 yards.

It still has the stock barrell in it. I couldn't see the cost of a new barrell for a gun i traded for for about 325$.

I'll take it out and bench it next week. Hopefully it doesn't shoot worse. The trigger is now at 3.5lbs, clean crisp break.

I have found that most factory barrels are pretty darn accurate. I am generally able to cut my groups in half just by installing an oversized bushing.

I have the same pistol in stainless and am beginning to consider some slight mods on it, myself. New sights and the Wilson extractor are a must...the other things...are still up for grabs. Maybe some internal changes, like springs, sear and trigger and possibly a Kings match bushing.

Thats one awesome 1911 you have there..I'll bet it shoots like a dream.

The worst part was fitting the Beavertail grip safety. The GI springy's have the old fashioned safety and the frame tabs extend quite a bit.

I had to grind 5mm off of each along the radius, fine file and fit the safety up. that took about 8 hours just to get that part right.

The thumb safety initially didn't work, it wouldn't lock up to engage the safety. I had to file a little of of the hammer engagement to get the safety to engage the slide. After all that was done, it went together easy.

I expected problems with the new hammer, sear and disconnect, but didn't have any. The Wilson trigger worked perfectly with these components.

I'll probably put a new bushing in and a new link to tighten the barrell up a bit and get better lockup. but i think i'll shoot it first in a couple of matches and see how it runs.
