I had everything except for the short barreled upper before my approval was done. Had the deal lined up for the upper assembly --- just waited until I got my approval and then picked up the upper. I don't think you're supposed to have a short upper laying around if you don't have a registered SBR lower or "pistol" lower to attach it to. Better safe than sorry!

Yes.... short barreled rifles are classified as NFA weapons --- a $200 tax is paid when you apply to the BATFE to build one or to transfer a registered one. There are no renewals or any other fees that I'll have to pay for as long as I keep it. If I sell it to someone else they will have to pay the same $200 tax and wait for approval before it can be transfered. [I don't think I'll be selling it anytime soon, though! |

AR-15 lovers
Cute gun,now if you could only figure out how to squeeze .308's into it.Going below a 20 inch barrel with a 5.56 seriously affects what little terminal performance that round has to begin with. There is hope.....it's called a G-3,or M-14, or FAL(or any of it's variants).

Somone explain to me the concept of a "trunk gun". I never did understand this. If its in the trunk, what good is it going to do you there? You would have to get out...go to the trunk, unlock/pop the trunk...then pull out your nifty ar (just using your rifle for an example).
I would think that if you have enough time to do all of this....then your life probably isnt in danger and you dont need a gun in the trunk in the first place. Now maybe you fellas just meant trunk gun as in a term to describe a gun that could be easily concealed somewhere......if so my bad. But I do know some people that have guns in their trunk.....I just dont understand why. Pistol under the seat....sure....rifle behind the seat of a truck..okay. Any type of gun in the trunk...only if you dont have a CCW permit and thats the way you have to transport it. On a side note...its a nice looking AR. I would have went for the 11.5 and thrown a 5.5 flash hider....NOT permanetly attatched. Then just switched the FH'f off depending on my mood.

Q. What about Mk262 or Mk262 Mod1? Due to the poor performance of M855 ammunition, particularly in short-barreled carbines of 10.5-14.5" in length, Navy SEALs, and eventually other SOCOM units, began experimenting with using loads originally designed for marksmanship units for combat. It was soon discovered that while these loads were both very accurate and had excellent terminal ballistics even from short barrels, the loads weren't quite ideal for combat. The target bullets had no cannelure, and the bullets weren't crimped in place, which could allow bullet set-back during feeding and raise chamber pressures to dangerous levels. Further, most loads were of somewhat mild velocities, as the load was chosen with accuracy, not terminal ballistics, in mind. Recently, Sierra agreed to add a minimal crimp to their bullet, and this has since replaced the Nosler bullet in the current versions of Mk262 Mod1. As of April 2004, Mk 262 Mod1 has seen extensive use in Afghanistan and Iraq, in carbines with barrels as short as 10.5", and has proven to be very effective at ranges that M855 is woefully inadequate from the same weapons. It is also commonly used in the Army's "Special Purpose Rifles" (SPRs), which are accurized 18"-barreled rifles used by soldiers with additional combat marksmanship training in a squad sharp-shooter role. I cut some of the article out....they rambled on about the nosler vs sierra contract etc.

I don't thing this shorty AR-15 was intended to be a "knock about" gun left in the trunk. Probably meant as a handy rifle to take with him on occasion. Also leaving this type of weapon in your trunk and if it got stolen, would be a titanic error. A stolen gun is bad news, but a special government allowed weapon stolen would be a bad situation all around.
I think the term "Trunk gun or Truck gun" is for someone living out in the country. "Hey, look a rabid coyote!, anybody gotta rifle in their trunk so we can dispatch it?" "yeah, I got my thurty thurty in my trunk, I'll get it"

This little rifle is just a cool playtoy. I'm not concerned with it's long-range accuracy, terminal ballistics or anything else. It's pretty dang accurate at the distances I'll be shooting it --- probably will never go over 100 yards. Most of my playing will just be short range (10-25 yards) shooting at dangerous beer cans and dirt clods!! For more serious work I'll grab one of my other rifles.
As for carrying it around in my truck (I don't have a trunk!) that probably won't happen. I'd be too paranoid that someone would break into my truck and steal my gun. I'll continue using my XD-40 for my truck gun! |

At public shooting ranges, this rifle is going to draw a crowd.
