Bolt action?
Hey guys, I need your advice again! I'm looking to purchase a simple bolt gun for target shooting/plinking. I'm thinking a .22LR would do just fine, but the .17M2 looks like a great cartridge for simple target shooting. I happened upon the Savage Arms Mark-II http://www.savagearms.com/markiifv.htm which is inexpensive and chambered in .22LR & .17M2.
Anyone have any advice on this? Thanks in advance!

I'd go with .22 since the ammo is cheap.

Forget the bolt action. For a higher caliber rifle..yes, but for pure .22 shooting fun, I'd go with Ruger's 10/22. Plus you can hop it up if you get bored with it in the stock configuration.

You may want to look into CZ for a .22, you can't add extras like a Ruger and it is slightly more because of the stock but IMHO it's a better piece

I don't know your reasons for wanting a bolt action .22, but I know the reason I wanted one!
I have a Glenfield Mod. 25 .22lr. My girlfriend has a son, who has difficulties in some areas. He is a bright kid, but has some issues. I like having the bolt action for him.. it slows him down, gives him some time to think. Plus, I like shooting it too! I can shoot that thing with the built on sites almost as well as I can shoot the 10/22 with a scope! Raymond

Ahhh...one of my collecting areas...old 22 rimfires!
Do yourself a favor. Do not buy a new 22 rimfire and start scouring the pawn shops, gunshows and other gunstores for an early Remington or Winchester bolt action 22 rimfire. The Remington models 501,511 and 514 come to mind first. These are MUCH better made and more accurate than any 10-22 or new 22 rimfire bolt gun. They also have better triggers and real walnut stocks and no plastic or cheapo cast aluminum parts. They can usually be had for around 100 bucks or less. Example: I have a Remington 511 Scoremaster that I bought from a pawnshop for 79.95 that out-shot my bull barreled 10-22 and many other 22 rifles I used to own. Winchester's Model 52 is nice as well (but can be pricey) and some of the early Mossberg 22 boltguns are very accurate and can be had cheaply. Also, don't pass up a nice early Marlin Model 39 lever action - you'd be shocked at how accurate these can be. An early Savage Anschultz is also another good choice, if you want to spend a little more dough. Find an early 22 and you'll love it, when the bullets start hitting the paper! I have several early American 22 rimfire bolt actions, lever and pump rifles and they're all fantastic shooters that were quality made pieces that will shoot forever. Skip the plastic and black stocked junk...old 22s rule! -Brickboy240

Thanks for your thoughts, guys. Unfortunately, there are really no pawn shops around my neck of the woods that deal with firearms. I guess it's time to hit the range and rent some guns.
Brickboy, if I feared the black plastic I may not have an XD now!
