3, is this everything I need to build a GOOD one?

Esential Arms AR15 lower reciever $77.00

AR Parts kit $460.00

Total: $537.00
Given that you have multiple threads, polls, etc. going on about what kind of rifle to buy, think there is a fundamental question that you have to know the answer to.

What do you want to use the rifle for?

Just want to own a cool rifle? If that's the case, does it really matter what you buy?

Just want to have an AR as plinker for the range? What you have listed above is fine. Want to use it for competition? You might want to put a little more in it up-front.

You may want to consider buying a complete rifle from someone like Stag. It costs a little more money, but you get the benefit of a solid rifle and a lifetime warranty.

I dont think there is really a "cool" factor here, It's just that... I want a good accurate carbine that I can get and not spend a grand on that will be accurate and reliable. Something to just shoot with and get good with that certain rifle. I wont be using it for comp. Just shooting and what not..

Hell, I may just save twice the money I was wanting to spend and go buy one thats already built. I just figured that there were other semi auto's that shot just as good as a AR but didnt cost a arm and a leg to buy.

would love to build it myself, but being a first time AR guy, i think i will go this route for the beginning...then mod the hell outta it

I have come across a place that I am planning on buying my parts from. It is called Coleman Tyler and the prices I have come across are really low. http://www.colemantyler.com

I plan on building a DPMS carbine and the price is around $680 for complete rifle once I buy the upper and lower.

Complete M4 Upper (A4 with midlength handguards) $490

Total $786.00

Build the lower, buy the upper, slap them together and for about 200 dollars more you get a high quality, well known brandname AR. And I'll put money on it that if you call Pete at ar15sales.com you'll be able to build that M4gery for even cheaper.
Listen to the man... I bought a RRA 9mm carbine for right around that price, and there's many deals to be had. I'd recommend Pete at AR15sales.com he pledges to beat anyone's price.

3. However if you want a high quality SHTF rifle then Id say go with higher end components. Stag, LMT, and others come to mind. Good and cheap often dont go together.

Good thing about the AR platform is modularity. You dont have to buy everything at once. Avoid the clowns on ARFCOM and go here:

Yeah, generally Model1Sales has a reputation for being the bottom of the barrel. I built a Del-ton and I'm really happy with it. I just like Del-ton's configurations better than Model1's.

It would be very hard to learn on a rifle that potentially won't function properly. I guess if you want to get immediate and remedial action down that would be the way to go.

If you really want to learn how the rifle works, build it (at least the lower). I dealt with the M16A2 a lot before my first build and could sound off the cycle of operations, rates, ranges, etc. during a DI inspection. However I didn't really understand how everything worked until I built my two lowers. Still saving to finish my 24" varmint rifle...

He's not (yet) But listening to him on H&C and reading his blogs it could be a real possibility about January or so. If not I am gonna write him in

A play on a phrase we use for backpacking gear. Accurate, reliable, cheap, pick 2. It would be hard to get all 3 above in one package. You don't need to spend a grand $750 to $900 should do it easily depending on configuration.
