Beitzel, do what I was going to do.

Complete Rifle (without lower)

A removable carry handle

and a Stag Stripped Lower

This way your AR won't be a Franken-gun, that will hurt resale value, and it is still relatively affordable at $743 (not counting the carry handle). I hear from tons of people that Pete from legal transfers is really great to work with. This should work. I have to wait even longer because I bought the Garand instead (worth it.)

ok some guy said I could build a Ar15 for $537....

these are the links he sent me and I have some questions.

1, are the parts any good.

2, should I do it?

3, is this everything I need to build a GOOD one?

Esential Arms AR15 lower reciever $77.00

AR Parts kit $460.00

Total: $537.00

1. Depends on who you ask. Model1sales is avoided like the plague by many industry professionals. Id probably go Del-ton before Id go with model 1 if your looking for cheap.

2. If this is just a plinker, yo should be OK.

3. However if you want a high quality SHTF rifle then Id say go with higher end components. Stag, LMT, and others come to mind. Good and cheap often dont go together.

Good thing about the AR platform is modularity. You dont have to buy everything at once. Avoid the clowns on ARFCOM and go here:

I've got a build with a pre-ban LR from EA (pre-ban means nothing anymore except that it was made a long time ago) with a Del-ton upper, but the other parts are not del-ton (e.g., trigger kit). Anyway, it works great and no problems. The EA fit was real tight initially, but it's fine now.

James, what suppliers do you go with when building a budget AR?

If you are already spending 550 bucks why not wait a few more paychecks to get a quality rifle. For example:

RRA Stripped lower $150
RRA Parts Kit $71
M4 style butt stock $75
Complete M4 Upper (A4 with midlength handguards) $490

Total $786.00

Build the lower, buy the upper, slap them together and for about 200 dollars more you get a high quality, well known brandname AR. And I'll put money on it that if you call Pete at ar15sales.com you'll be able to build that M4gery for even cheaper.

Same here. I went with a M1S LPK and it was so-so. The finish was/is "meh" and there were a couple parts out of spec enough that I had to order new ones (ordered DPMS parts). My next build is going to be DPMS/Stag quality or better all around.

Thumbs up Fair Price for AR15

I have been reading this thread and have come up with a totally different question. What is the price range for a good quality AR15 rifle? I am talking about a complete rifle. From my research I have found rifles from $1500-$2000. The rifles that I have looked at are from Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, DPMS and Atlantic Firearms. What do others think of these companies I have looked at and which has the best reputation for quality guns?

Out of those companies - I would rank them RRA, BM, DPMS, AF. The prices of ARs is very dependent on their configuration / specifics. $1500 for a varment rifle isn't bad...but $1500 for an A2 basic rifle is ridiculous (you should get 2-1/2 rifles for that price).

Why build it when you can buy it for less than $800.00.
