Beer and Wine at Aldi Grocery stores?
Hey guys. I'm gettin to where some serious finance crunching will be in order around here....school supplies need to be bought, vehicle parts need to be purchased, along with a host of other things on my "to get" list, among the usual bills that always show up right on time each month.
This weekend is one of those weeks where bills fell right in tune with a pay period...so funds for everything else has to be budgeted. Including groceries unfortunately. I have been used to shopping at the Walmart, but am tired of givin the suckers my money....so I've been shoppin at our local Save-a-Lot store. A cartload of groceries would run me a $50 bill, instead of much more for much less at a bigger store. I haven't shopped at one of our somewhat local Aldi stores probably for 5 years at least...and I guess they have some kinds of beer/wine now. I was curious as to if any of you fine gents has tried any of em....and what was your honest finding? I know I can cut out beer for Dad if needed, but if I can get ahold of somethin drinkable I'd buy it regularly.....instead of the usual weekend plan that I've enjoyed for a good year now.... Friends would show up on "grocery day"...I think they got used to me buyin premium meat from the meat store...and always havin some good brews in the fridge. Bein the country gent that I am...I always feel the need to entertain my guests...even if they are moochin off my stuff! Offerin a nice cold beverage, a juicy steak, and making a nice campfire is my idea fun with friends. This weekend was to be shocking to my buddy that happened to cruise over....no case of cold beer in the fridge, no grill ready to fire up....and Matt flat out not in the mood to go spend a fortune. That bein said....I might keep a case of somethin or other in the fridge for me...and anyone else that might want a sip....but if they don't like my cheap stuff...then they can bring their own kinda thing.

We do the Aldi thing here. I like about 98% of the stuff I have tried there. In the fresh meat section, there are these sausages that are made with chicken and stuffed with gouda cheese...very tasty! They also have marinated turkey breasts fresh for $6. You can't see in the bag because of the marinade, and I was a little hesitant to try it, but there is a lot of meat in there. Basically it is two pieces from a split turkey breast. Slow cook them on the grill for about an hour to an hour and a half, and MAN they are good. The one pkg. has enough meat for 5 of us.
The breakfast skillet things in the bag are really good too. Just add eggs. I think the bag says 4 eggs, but I put in six. The Corona look a like beer isn't that good. There are some mini kegs there that resemble a Beck's mini keg that doesn't taste to bad at all. I haven't tried any of the other beer or wine there. I drink Coronas, but I feed my moocher buddies whatever beer was on sale....from Busch Light to Milwaukees Best. They may razz me, but I don't see them refusing a beer. With 3 boys to feed, we shop Aldi more than not so all our paychecks don't go straight to their bellies. GHILLIE Last edited by GHILLIE; 07-29-2007 at 09:31 AM. |

I'm experienced with ALDI's selection of beer. They also have a variety of wines availible but I've never tried any of them. During the x-mas season they had Spiced Wine, which was pretty good, but pricey compared to the cost of making it myself (I love a good hot mug of glog). Anyway, "Monterrey" is the Corona look-alike. I've never tried it because I do not like Corona to begin with. Another one that they have every time I go there is Wernesgruner which is actually pretty dang good (Aldi is a german company for those who don't know.). However, it's still 4.99 per 6-pack and around here, beer can be had for cheaper. I live in the land of beer though.

i am somewhat of a beer snob and like dark flavorfull imports and microbrews, and though i will drink ANYTHING if its cold and free no beer is to nasty is its free and cold. Fact is i really enjoy my microbrews.
I am not a wine drinker at all. I do recall a atricle in detroit news or detroit free press about a Aldi wine that scores well at wine tasting partys is cheap as hell and has a huge cult following among the wine aficianados. Couldnt tell you the name if my life depended on it, but if you google or ask some whine coniseurs you may find out if you can handle their death stares for you wanting Aldi wine. I swear the article says the wine does great at tasting partys when people dont know who made it or how cheap it is. |

I don't do well with people that just stop by, Everyone knows to call before they stop by, Otherwise I am probably not going to be very welcoming. I don't mind throwing some food on the grill with friends but almost all my friends bring something by to chip in. There is usually some ribs, chicken and some chops on, Or they brink some salad or whatever. And everyone brings along some beer. Not many people drink Microbrews like I, so folks bring what they like. I don't have a problem with moochers. I guess cause I don't mind telling someone how I feel..

It's not so much me always providing everything when buddies come over....sometimes they'll ask if they "need to bring anything" but it's when the unannounced happens.
They usually know when I'm off work, and have gotten used to me having "Dad time" on my time off of work....they've gotten used to me having some cold brews in the fridge...and an "unlimited" supply of ammo to enjoy. Sadly I'm gona be havin a hard time supplyin things for myself, let alone everybody else who just happens to come by to chill out....and ALWAYS have somethin to do. I'm noticing some of my buddies dislike just sittin outside, unless there's somethin else to "do"....whether it be me "wanna cold beer bro?"...or "feel like doin some shootin?" I can't help but want to be a good host to guests...I was just raised that way....but it does get expensive.

wine
My husband drinks the Corona like beer. It is called Monterey Cervasa. He seems to like it.
I really like the Winking Owl Merlot. It is only $3 a bottle. I believe this is the one that all the chatter is about. |

I'm glad to hear some good info....thanks.
I'm a micro brew fan myself too, but after 3 or 4....even cheap beer tastes ok!
