An interesting experience

Thought I'd share this with you all. I was at home Saturday night, it was around 11:00 pm or so. I was in the bedroom and heard a noise that sounded extemely out of the ordinary and immediately became quite alert. I grabbed my 9mm pistol cursing myself for leaving the .40 in the car and began clearing the house. I cleared the bathroom by "cutting the pie" and then the kitchen the same way making sure to stay back from the corner and pop quickly around the corner. I cleared the living room, checked the door lock and everything was in place. I told my wife to grab and load her pistol and quickly flipped on the light and opened the door with her for backup. Nobody was there.

This is the first time I have ever reacted to an odd noise this way (and the first odd noise of this type to occur at home).

Anyone else have advice or criticism on this? What is your "procedure" for house clearing in the event of a possible intrusion? Do you freak out like I did at the first sign of anything abnormal?

It was interesting and a learning experience. For starters I'll have my wife prepare much sooner next time.

joe

It was a big deal to him at the time....when you hear somethin really outta the ordinary.
I had an instance recently where it sounded like someone pounding on a window in the back of the house....went outside all hot and heavy to find nothing but maybe a creakin board.....
When somethin just don't seem right....you know what I mean.

If it were me, I wouldn't "pop out from around the corner". I'd slice the pie, seeing as much as I could then try to make silent entry into the room or hallway. Remember, the doorway is the "fatal funnel"; move through it fast!

The 'click-clack' of one of my AKs being charged usually stops all 'noises'....Even the wind will hesitate for a second...

Were you and your wife the only ones in the house? If so, I wouldn't have even tried clearing the house. I'd hunker down in the bedroom, call 911 and wait. They can have what ever they want out of the house, that's what insurance is for. If they come into the bedroom, all bets are off. Now if you had kids in other rooms, that's a totally different situation. I would have tried to get to them, and get them to a safe room. Then do as I described above. I know I for one am not properly trained to clear a house.

When I lived in the suburbs on 1/4 acres in a cul de sac (blessedly, over 17 years ago), I started having the wierdest feeling when I'd come home.

Some doors would be open or closed that were in the other state when I left that morning (and I was positive of this) and I had the feeling someone had been there or was STILL in the house.

It was so strong I decided I was suffering a paranoid delusion and sat on the front porch with my back to the house drinking a beer on purpose since that's the last thing I'd do if I had an intruder of course. One time I swore I heard someone walking in the house.

The 4th time this happened, I grabbed my .45 and did a careful search of the house to prove to myself I was paranoid.

In my closet stood the neighbor's 14 year old son.

He had been sneaking into my house while I was gone AND when I was sleeping (my dog had died), coming in through the dog door in the garage.

I locked up the gun, dragged him over to daddy who didn't seem to care.
I called my friend who was a reserve deputy and he came up and had a very scary talk with the boy. I stayed home the next day to lock the dog door and add a deadbolt to the door between the garage and the house.

Now, I take my Spidey Senses seriously.

He was peeping and creeping for the thrill of it.
And I'm still talking about it 17 years later, so
I guess it kinda stuck.
