Good job!
However, my comments would suggest that you find SOME WAY to keep your XD handy, safe and LOADED! That few seconds it took you to grab the gun, load it and get back to the door is where you lost sight of the suspected trespasser. If this had been a really bad situation, that loss of sight could have cost you your life or that of one of your family. I see that your son is 1 year old. Thats a really small child that cannot yet climb and is likely just learning to walk. It is virtually impossible he would ever get his hands around the grip of an XD and deactivate the grip safety while also pulling the trigger even if he did manage to get to it. If it were me, my XD would be somewhere close and LOADED unless you have friends or family over that have older children. |

My uncle put an electric buzzer on his front gate, it would ring next to his bed, so if anyone came through it at night, he'd know and be ready for them with the shotgun.

Back when I was in college (read: young, invincible and stupid) my roommates and I were tossing back a few in our apartment when I happened to look outside and see some guy peeing on the base of my gas grill. I completely lost it, I ran thru (yes you read that correctly) the screen door and grabbed the guy and threw him down the 10-12 concrete steps leading to the sidewalk. He bounced and rolled the whole way. Only then did I turn around and see his 3 huge friends standing beside my patio. Luckily they turned and bolted the other direction when my roommates came outside to see what the heck was going on.
The guy I threw was out cold on the sidewalk, but luckily I didn't get any pee on me. We went back inside and poured a couple more. (Like I said, young and stupid). FMC |

I would have gone outside if I was armed. My Rotty would have been at my side too. the fact that its COMPLETED fenced in means its suspicious enough to confront (read: talk) to the guy about it. and tell him to stay the hell off!

Look at it this way, he'll probably never think about pissing on someone's grill again. And in this case, I would have had my gun on me and ordered him to get on the ground while I had a family member call the police to sort him out.

Indiana is a great state in that there is no duty to retreat when on your property (in your house or on your lawn). That makes confrontation safer than if there was some asinine law about retreating. You cannot shoot someone for walking across your fenced in backyard, but technically you could hold at gun point until police arrive if you have reason to believe they were in process of committing a felony. If they tried to attack you then self defense would be justified.
If it was me? I'd have been out the door (after a quick check to make sure I knew how many were out there) and confronted him with my pistol holstered (might be concealed, might be open either way holstered) and locking the door behind me. Legitimate reason (like a utlity guy) no worries mentioned 'peeping toms in the area' and it'll all be forgotten. If it's a random stranger tell them they need to wait because the police have been called and they are trespassing. Get them written up for trespassing. My backyard is 6' privacy fence with NO latch to enter form the outside. It's one sided hardware. That means they had to come in from the one entry point in the front yard right next ti my side entry door by the kitchen which would take some serious cajones.. assuming they didn't jump the back fence. Either way, it was done purposefully. If they tried to leave, I wouldn't stop them at the same time they'd better walk a wide berth around me any steps in my direction will result in draw and low ready position. Never let them close distance and make sure if they try and step toward you they understand you aren't kidding instantly, should they continue, present the universal translator... Anyone stupid enough to continue walking at a man with a gun pointed at them saying stop needs to be taken out of society and the gene pool anyway IMO.

Someone walking through your yard, even a fenced yard, doesn't seem like much of a thing to me. I live in a very low crime area however, when I lived in Arizona it would have been a bigger deal I guess.
