Who Goes Prairie Dog Hunting??
Hey guys, girls,
I was just curious as to who all goes prairie dog hunting? I will be venturing into Kansas in Aug. with my newly bought AR15 equipped with a 3-9X40 scope. I have no clue what I am getting into, LOL, but form what I have heard, it's fun. I have a guy who reloads ammo and is going to sell my 1,000 .223 rounds for cheap cheap cheap! Anyway, lets see your prairie dog guns! Gimme some hints, clues, whatever on how to get those dogs! Whats the average shot? I have heard 150 yards. I will of course be packing the XD on my side for....protection, just in case a rabid dog wants to test his luck. LOL Thanks in advance! |

lol, ummm, not that I have heard. I don't think you wanna eat a prairie dog. Farmers want them of their land because they cause devastation to crops.

Your first one might be 150 yards. Maybe a couple of dumb ones after that. Then you can count on 300-600 yards. Guys who can shoot, shoot them farther out. You don't do that with an ar though.

Those Texas prairie dogs must be smart. I used a friends Ruger 10/22. Longest shot was 100 yards.

well, I know there is a difference, but around here, I hunt groundhogs. on G-ma's farm, AVERAGE shot is 200-300 yards. Killed one at 523 yards this weekend. 300 Weatherby Mag, 4-12 X 50 Simmons Scope.
Here, groundhogs damage more tractors than crops. damn groundhog holes!

I don't shoot prairie dogs, but i do shoot their slightly smaller cousin the Flickertail (Richardson's Ground Squirrel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard...round_Squirrel)
I use a .22 and almost never have to shoot farther than 100 yds. I have made a shot (once) at almost 200 yds, but that was a truly lucky shot considering the crosswind and guessing at the elevation and windage I needed with the cheap 4X scope I had. A .223 or larger is unneeded for an animal that is between 30-40cm (12-16 inches) in length unless you like to see an animal completely shredded. As for making shots at 600+ yds, anyone that can hit a 12" tall and 4" wide target at 600 yds with consistency is a truly remarkable shot. Here are some sites you may want to look at. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prairie_dog http://www.geocities.com/graymist44/pdhunt2006.html Quote:

Here's a nice Black Rifle Video check out the 400 yard shot 1:40 into the video, then tell me a properly setup AR won't do this

This would be my coyote/prairie dog setup. I haven't had a chance to do anything but target shoot it yet, though.
![]() I would put a higher power scope on that AR if I were you, but if you shoot it well, then don't worry about it. That AR will shoot way out there. A lot of varminters shoot AR's, and routinely shoot out to several hundred yards with them. |
