Thumbs up Girl Gun?

My wife freaked me out today. She asked me what a good caliber hand gun she should get. One with not too much kick, but will stop someone. We shot my XD40 service last Wednesday and the recoil was a little too much for her. She has shot a Beretta 9mm before and felt the kick from my XD40 was less than the 9mm she had shot.

So, the pigs are taking off and Satan is pulling on his parka in my world.

Any recommendations?

.38 special in a revolver. Not too much kick and easy to learn to shoot.

I second this emotion. My wife and I went to Ladies' Night at the local range (everything's free for women except ammo), and we tried out about six different handguns, including....

XD9sc
Glock 26
Sig 229
Taurus snubby revolver
S&W lightweight revolver (Airweight?)

She decided she liked the XD9sc best (with no coaching from me, I swear ). Even with her weak hands she could work the slide, and she preferred the feel of the grip the most of all of them. Then she drilled four touching holes in the silhouette's head at 15 feet.

Summary: find a range that does rentals and a Ladies' Night if possible. There's no substitute for going hands-on with all the likely candidates.

Close .357 then she can shoot 38 all day and load .357 for defense. Of course she needs to shoot some .357 to get the feel

I second the .38 Special / 357 option. Rugers have enough weight to make the recoil a non-issue.

Noting coming out of a .38 special has impressed me with expansion or ballistics. Also, when you can put 10 rounds of 9mm in a subcompact frame, it's really no comparison.

I'd get her a XD Service in 9mm or a used HS2000. You can purchase 9mm reloaded ammo (Zero, others) if you don't reload yourself. This ammo will have a little less bark/bite than factory 9mm.

A heavy revolver is a good option, but that long and heavy trigger may frustrate her.
