heck, you're "just around the corner" from OS. Go see if he wants some part time help while you're there.

I lived in Chicago for three years from 2001 to 2004. We lived in Lincoln Park (neighborhood close to downtown) and it was before my wife and I had children, so we had a blast!
I agree with the comments about the Museums. Here are a few additional recommendations: 1. Check out the Hancock building. You have to pay to go to the top of the Sears tower, and since it is downtown, you have to look down on all the buildings. Instead go to the Signature Room, a lounge on the 95th floor of the Hancock building which is on Michigan Ave. about a mile and half north of downtown. There is no charge to get into the Signature room and you can spend the money on a couple cocktails. Also since it is north of downtown you have an awesome view of the city skyline. I recommend getting there about an hour before dusk so you can get a table near a window and then just relax with your drink as the city lights come on. 2. You've got to go to the viewing room at the Chicago Board of Trade. Get there before trading starts and then watch as all he** breaks loose when the clock hits 8 am (or is it 8:30, I can't remember). If you've ever seen the movie Trading Places, that is what it's like. 3. Definitely get to the Billy Goat, but it has to be the original on the lower level of Michigan Ave. It is the place that inspired Belushi's "Cheezborger, Cheezborger" routine on SNL. It is also tied to the Cubs "Curse of the Billy Goat". The food in Chicago is great. My wife and I love great food so we ate out a lot. Post what kind of food you would like to try and how much you are willing to spend. Also, you might want to subscribe to Zagat online where you can search for restaurants using all kinds of criteria. We tried all kinds of ethnic food while we were there, so I can give you the low down on where to go for your different food cravings. Also, check out metromix.com. It is the Chicago Tribune's entertainment website. It will give you a good idea of what's going on in town. My wife and I loved Chicago. We only left because we wanted to start a family and it is too expensive to raise a family in the city. Also, we wanted our children to know their grandparents and the rest of the fam. If not for kids, we never would have left (despite the horrible gun laws). |
