I think of wikipedia like I do the "for dummies" books. A good intro but doesn't have all the info.

Some say it's a neronic cross - first used by nero - a brokern, upsidedown cross. It's been used in Satanworship and was used by the moslems during the crusades.

Some will say that's not true it was invented in the 50's. I know that's not right, I saw some coin or jewelry - I forget with it on, that dated back from medieval times.

But as far as the actual origin, there is no consensus that I know of... I do tend more to see it as a broken cross.

Well whatever the origin is we all know it's common use in America during the 60's was a symbol for peace and not some underlying Satanic or Moslem plot.

Hippies became yuppies and their new symbol was the Mercedes.
