As far as the proposed legislation goes---well, what can I say? I was going to say I can't believe we have such stupid people representings us. But, of course, most of them don't represent us. They're out for number one. Power and money, that's what's important to most of our elected reps. If those bozos were running a corporation (with the exception of a few, well known)---well, maybe that's not a good anology. How about, if I ran my business like our elected reps., I'd be flat assed broke and then should be shot for good measure to throw a little chlorine in the gene pool.

Oh, and the electronic thing? If you're leary of electrons, better not fly in the big ones. Fly by wire on a lot of modern passenger planes as well as warbirds.

I like the way they want to pass it, then study it to see if it can be done! Kind of like Judge Roy Bean justice, hang 'em in the morning, then hold the trial in the afternoon.
Isn't it funny they want to title it "Child Proof Act". Pricks want that so when it gets tabled or voted down, thay can say the Republicans voted against child safety.

This is almost as dumb as electronic steering, electronic braking, and electronic acceleration. Would you buy a car that had no mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the wheels? How about no linkage between the BRAKE PEDAL AND THE BRAKES? When will people learn that sometimes the only way to make something work is with something mechanical, electronics are still too unreliable, as sjp2452 said.
Don't drive a VW then most of them are fly by wire and many new cars esspecially high end. And don't ever fly most new plans are the same way, have tripple redundecys but still no direct linkage.

I work in Aircraft maintenance. I can't speak for all aircraft but I know for a fact that the Air Forces C-17 has direct mechanical control of the flight control surfaces. This is of course only a back up if the electronic flight contol system fails. And the cables of course don't directly control the flight control surfaces since that would be impossible due to the size, they instead connect to hydraulic actuators which in turn control the flight control surfaces. I know that all the Air Force Heavy Air Craft have mechanical back ups similar to this. I'm not sure about commercial Air Craft. It's possible they don't since they aren't expected to be able to withstand small arms fire.

Cars and I guess airplanes too also have two power sources. The engine/alternator and the battery. If you lose one power source, there's always the other to provide most of the functionality to whatever "fly-by-wire" system might be at hand.

In a car, when you lose power, you're notified that you lost power in one way or another. Then you get to make use of the other power sources to pull over to the side of the road.

In a gun, when you pull the trigger, you want it to go bang. Immediately.

I can turn the engine off on my Jeep and still steer. I can still use the brakes.

Disconnect the sear on my XD with some stupid electrical system, and the entire thing is useless.
