Yay for sulfuric acid!

Raleigh — A sulfuric acid leak at a north Raleigh pharmaceutical products plant prompted authorities to urge nearby residents to stay indoors Thursday afternoon.

The only residents affected by the advisory, which covers a half-mile radius around the Mallinckrodt Chemical plant at 8801 Capital Blvd. are those in the Riverhaven apartment complex, authorities said.

Acid began leaking from an outdoor tank at Mallinckrodt at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. The acid was trapped in a containment basin around the tank, but the Raleigh Fire Department's hazmat team responded to clean up the spill, authorities said.

Crews had removed about half of the leaked acid by late Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Motorists were urged to find alternate routes for the evening rush hour, as heavy delays were expected on Capital Boulevard.

The spill caused no immediate injuries, but authorities feared the prospect of rain Thursday afternoon reacting with the acid and called for the early dismissal of Durant Road Elementary School and Durant Road Middle School as a precaution.

Neuse Baptist Church Preschool and a Sheetz gas station, both located on Thornton Road, across Capital Boulevard from the Mallinckrodt plant entrance, also closed early because of the spill, authorities said.

Mallinckrodt also sent home all non-essential personnel as a precaution, said Kathy Akroyd, a spokeswoman for the state Division of Waste Management, which responded to the spill.

No other evacuations have been ordered.
