What laptop should I buy in the $1000 range?

I told my girlfriend I would ask on here for input on purchasing a new laptop. Hopefully you guys can help.. She wants to spend $1000 tops..

She will be using it mostly for internet and microsoft office. speed and memory would be nice.. Burning CDs would be nice as well..

So what do you think?

I am not a fan of Macs by any means, but for $1,099 the MacBook should be nice. The Core Duo processor is incredibly fast, and it burns CDs and everything too. She could go with a cheaper PC, but I'm willing to bet that she'd be happier with the MacBook. The best thing to do is go to a store and check them out and compare options. The best laptop is the one that fits YOU.

A mac is a good choice.

However, I love my Sony VAIO. Superb performance with wireless internet, very light, and long battery life. I think I paid $1200, but that was like 3 years ago so I know they're cheaper now.

So do I need to upgrade anything on the macbook or do I just through down $1,099 and be done with it?

Also, we have a apple store here in town. Should I buy from them or would I get a better deal on it somewhere else?

If she's going to invest that much, you might want to upgrade to a DVD burner. Especially if she's going to keep music for a MP3/Ipod, the DVD burning feature is great to copy loads of data. If she has a 2nd PC for that stuff, it's obviously not needed. But if she plans to keep the laptop for many years, the DVD is a necessary upgrade IMHO.

For just internet and MS Office, the $1099 version should suffice. Macs are very fast and efficient with their memory.

you can get a laptop for much less if all she wants to do is surf, burn CDs, and run MS office. Go with a Toshiba from best Buy. Something in the 750 range should do her well.

I'd say the stock 1GB of memory is more than enough for internet and word processing. Upgrading the 80 GB hard drive may or may not be necessary depending on how much stuff she's planning to store on there. I'd say that it should be plenty, unless she's planning on putting a ton of music/video on there. I'm still making do with a 40 GB drive in my almost 4 year old IBM ThinkPad. (hopefully getting a MacBook Pro in the fall, but I bought too many guns recently so it'll have to wait ) It looks like to upgrade to the DVD burner, you have to spend $200 for the faster processor and 120 GB hard drive too. That's not a bad deal, but it's getting a little over the $1,000 budget and probably isn't needed. I've only used my DVD burner a handful of times (< 5, I'd say).

As for where to buy it, the price at the Apple store will be the same as from the online one. If she happens to be a student, the online store has an education section that's cheaper.

You can probably get free shipping online. If you go to your Apple Store, you'll be paying like $90 for sales tax!
