I feel your pain. I wrecked my new truck back on Feb 2 when the guy in front of me was stopped in the road and turning without brake lights or turn signal. I locked up my brakes and hit him and bounced into the oncoming lane of traffic where I had a head on collision with another car. My truck is still sitting at the body shop with 298 miles on the odometer. If the wreck hadn't of been "my fault" they would have totalled my truck. As it stands, it has over $10,000 worth of damage to it.

If you want to avoid having to look back when you get on a freeway then go to Wal-Mart, buy a little convex, stick-on mirror and put it on the outside edge of your sideview mirror on the driver's side.

I've been using those convex mirrors on both side mirrors for over 20 years now.

Wow...glad you were ok. Yes, the construction on I-10 is awful. I saty away from that freeway as much as possible.

"lucky it was a tahoe, any regular car would have been completly flattened with your truck." good to hear your ok though. Well, you have never seen the crash photos of many Volvo sedans, especially my 91 240 - they survive crashes better than most US and Jap cars. Thats why I drive a Volvo...safety against the idiots and soccermoms in their Expeditions/Tahoes/Sequoias that cannot judge distances and deal with blind spots worth a damn. From the years 1984 through 1993, nobody was killed while riding in a Volvo 240 - that is from Volvo's website.

I have been using convex mirrors since the 60s, I guess that makes me old too, or is that just too old?

Nope, I have convex mirrors on my 99 Silverado. You simply cannot see Civics and Minis in my mirrors without them. Besides, its easier to see curbs, when parking.

Nah, it's the pants you're wearing in that picture that make you old.

the convex mirrors your talking about are "blind spot" mirrors. my truck has those built in, thats what i was looking at when the 2 people hit their brakes. i wasnt following them too close, traveling 40-50mph you can close a gap of a few hundred ft in a second or two... in my case, thats all it took.

the bodyshop guys said that if my truck wasnt lifted they would probably have totaled the Taho. because my truck was lifted i completely missed the frame, and crunched only the body.

So your sideview mirrors are mounted behind you? My convex mirror doesn't require me to look back and I'm able to keep an eye on the cars in front of me through peripheral vision when I'm looking at it.

Hey man, no offense, we are ALL guilty of driving too close behind people. People do it all the time. It just so happens that you got the short end of the stick on this occasion. If the SUV in front of you was able to hit the brakes behind a guy with no brakelights and stop without hitting him then it seems like you should be able to stop without hitting the SUV who does have brakelights. The fact that you could not indicates that you were traveling too close behind the SUV as is the case in 99% of rearend collisions. I feel for you though...I've almost done the same thing before. My brother has done it.

Driving at a constant rate of 50mph considering that you don't touch the brakes at all, the max distance you can travel in a second is 73 feet.

so in 3 seconds you travel 220ft, thats almost a football field...

2 seconds, about how long it takes to find your merging spot and judge the speed you need to merge at, 146ft still plenty of room between the cars,
