I lived in Austin, liked it way better than Houston, but if you get in the right neighborhood it is awesome. Being realistic though I'd always CCW due to you might not always be in the right neighborhood, but hey its safer than Detroit were I am now so I can't say much. Choose the neighborhood carefully, the school carefully, those are very big decisions, schools change every five years dramatically do fact based research, and just walk into a cafeteria during lunchtime tells you a lot. From my memory certain parts of Houston stank, just be careful once again your in the right neighborhood. But I hate the smell of oil and fish and the sea there doesn't agree with me either, meh maybe I"m just weird.
HEB ROCKS I miss it.

Houston isn't that bad, I spent the first 18 years of my life there inside the loop. I think that a lot of people that live outside the loop (and even further) are somehow scared of it. I left in 2000 to go to college and ended up in western North Carolina, A far cry from Houston.
My folks still live there and have been fine, in the 55 some odd years they have lived inside the loop never any trouble at all. Oh course there are neighborhoods where this would happen but there are plenty of great places inside the loop too. I don't think of Houston as a crimed filled city, I dont like it becuse it has too much concrete and traffic. I hope that you enjoy it though.

The house I'm purchasing is actually south of Houston in Friendswood. My wife went to HS in that district and the schools are very good. I'll be driving down on Dec 5th.

Yes, HEB does rock, I wouldn't buy groceries anywhere else (except the occaisional trip to Fiesta for international stuff you can get nowhere else).

When I get settled in I'll make sure to get in touch with some of the 'local' texans on the board.
