Man, talk about a conflict. I'm invited to spend that weekend on a 5000 acre ranch near Brackettville, Texas for spring turkey hunting with a bunch of friends. I've seen more deer and turkeys in the few days I've spent there than in all the rest of my life. Nice quarters, jeeps provided, great food, beautiful country but it's a five hour drive from Houston. On the other hand I can drive about 25 minutes east on I-10 to the NRA convention and a gunshow to make all the others I've seen pale in comparison. Our club (Bayou Rifles) will have a booth there to hang out around and maybe work a shift. We need longer weekends! I'm leaning toward the convention.

I've been near Bracketville, hunting deer, hogs and turkey.

That would be my choice. What abeautiful area this time of year. The Nueces River...all the bluebonnets...nice cool breezes and turkey galore.

Yep...screw the crowded convention and the ratty GRB/downtown Houston area...I'd be in Bracketville! Gobble gobble!

(LOL...can I go in your place? I've got a few nice decoys, a good slate call and a really nice Beretta auto 12 bore than will bring em down with gusto?!?)

Dadgummit Brickboy you are making this difficult. I'm not a real enthusiastic hunter but this time last year I was there riding in a jeep with one of the owners around dusk. I didn't even take a shotgun but had a recently acquired M1 Carbine with me. We ran upon a few hens and a gobbler and Greg slammed on the brakes yelling "shoot it shoot it". Just as the gobbler hit the ground I fired one very lucky round and he keeled right over and never wiggled. It was a much cleaner shot than any shotgun could do and made some of the best jerky I've ever eaten. My first turkey. I doubt I can ever match than once in a lifetime experience. The NRA convention offers another once in a lifetime experience. The convention on Friday and heading to Brackettville early Saturday is starting to sound unreasonably reasonable.

Need so help. Did I read that they don't sell any gun at the show? Looking to pick up my first XD sc9. Do I need tickets befor I get to the door or can I just get them there. How much?

Thanks for you time

Try Gander Mountain. I've heard they were giving out tickets at the handgun counter. Don't know if they still have any, but worth a try.
You read correctly. They don't sell at the NRA show.

Thats funny! I too have shot turkey with my M-1 Carbine. Actually, thats the best use I have found for my M-1 Carbine - it is too light for anything bigger, but put a tom out of commission real quickly!

Since you cannot buy guns at the NRA show, I'd go hunting. This ought ot be a banner spring for turkey hunting. Does the place you're going have hogs, too? Bonus for hogs..maybe an exotic or some coyote shooting, too? Oh...if I had access to a plac in Bracketville...I'd be there in a heartbeat. I miss hunting in Uvalde County, badly!

Sorry, but I drive around alot in this crowded city and five days a week of sitting in crowded inner-loop traffic is enough for me. There would have to be more than a few neat brochures and promo items to get me down to the GRB on a Saturday. If they're not selling guns and accessories...forget it!
